Elizabeth Glasson pure folly

We were talking about seeking out evidence to substantiate our assumptions the other day. I am still suffering from the acceptance of information years ago that I simply copied and assumed to be correct.

My recent reality check was with a certain Elizabeth Glasson who had married Henry Tucker in 1823 in Kenwyn. Armed now with the census information this Elizabeth clearly believed her birth year to have been near enough to 1800/01 and her birthplace to be Kenwyn - she states as much in the census from 1841 to 1871. She and Henry had a number of children, William Henry, Robert Glasson, Eliza Thompson, Elizabeth Jane to name four of the six.

So I have just asked myself - why is this Elizabeth assumed to be the daughter of William Glasson (who died at New Mills in 1814) and Jane Solomon - Elizabeth said to be baptised in 1808 at Kenwyn - and what makes it worse is that I have a note saying that in 1841 this Elizabeth is living with her brother Robert in Phillack suggesting that she was not even married in 1841.

Now this marriage has sat in my software programme for many years and the information about the Tucker family has been added to it over time - I would probably never have noticed the error, until I wanted to know which Elizabeth married William Jones (widower, Master Mariner) in the Register Office in Redruth in 1848.

The future Mrs Jones was a 40 year old spinster living in Phillack, the daughter of a miller named William Glasson. Making her birth year about 1808 - making her more likely to be the daughter of William Glasson and Jane Solomon and explains why she was able to be living unmarried with her brother Robert in 1841.

But here is the catch - if Mrs Elizabeth Jones is the daughter of William and Jane Glasson - then who is Mrs Elizabeth Tucker the daughter of?? The only clue is the use of the name Robert Glasson Tucker but no guarantee that this is her fathers name as opposed to a grandfather, brother etc.

So I have an Elizabeth Glasson, born around 1801 in Kenwyn, getting married in 1823 - and I do not know who she is....

Lannanta - I can see only two possibilities at the moment.

1. Elizabeth d/o John and Anne Glasson bpl. 16th August 1801 at Camborne
2. Elizabeth base daughter of Jane Whitford bp. 21st January 1801 at Kenwyn

I can't see why Elizabeth d/o John and Anne might say she was born at kenwyn and I can see no evidence of a Glasson connection to Jane Whitford.

Also need to be aware that she was a widow before she married Mr Tucker - unlikely but a possibility...

Hmm - that stretches the imagination a little to come up with a likely source of the name Robert Glasson Tucker.

Obvious answer would be deceased husband particularly as she would have been just 22 or so in 1823.

I wouldn't bother chasing Thomas Hicks as a possible clue as he seemed to go through a fair bit of ink as a witness in 1823 alone!

But between 1815 and 1830 the OPC records show only one occasion when the name DENCH appears as a witness and that is with the Tucker/Glassan marriage.

Might be a clue or might not.

Maybe a big clue.

When I look in my database I have a Robert Glasson Dench, son of Mary and William Dench - Mary of course being a Glasson. Mary is the daughter of Robert Glasson and Joan Burt - more on them in a minute. Mary's oldest sibling was Nicholas Burt Glasson baptised in 1782 at Kenwyn and the youngest was Samuel baptised in 1804 at Kenwyn (and he also married a Tucker). So no children baptised between 1799 (Nicholas Burt) and Samuel. Just the right place for an Elizabeth... but I do not have the Kenwyn baptisms to see if she has been missed.

Robert Glasson and Jane Burt are still a mystery family to me - I think we have discussed them sometime before. Robert likely to have been born around 1760 and there are a couple of candidates to choose from - Gwinear and Camborne - but I have nothing to indicate the correct one.

I have just searched said Kenwyn PR from (and including) 1795-1803 with no sign of a possible missed entry for Elizabeth.
However I think there is sufficient circumstantial evidence to suggest that she probably belongs to the family of Robert Glasson and Jane Burt.

If we suppose (at least for a moment ) that there is actually something documented somewhere about a birth/baptism for William Burt Glasson in 1799 then it is reasonable to suppose that there may also be an entry for at least one other child ........... somewhere!

I would suggest that you at least make this a 'temporary home' for Elizabeth.

I believe that Witness was 'W Dench' which may well have been brother-in-law William.

Yes I did I am sorry - I have a baptism date for William Burt as 18 August 1799 and I have followed him through all the census until 1880 when he died still at Carclew Street. I think we originally looked at this family when we were looking at Wilmot Quick.

I agree that this seems to be the right place for Elizabeth - especially when you note where they lived and the name of Robert Glasson Dench, so I will take your advice.

G'day Lannanta - I have that as a Birth date rather than a Baptism date for William B but it would be nice to find the source.

As for Elizabeth - if nothing else then at least you will have her where she will be easier to track.
But there are so many circumstantial bits and pieces that it appears obvious that this is where she belongs.

Lannanta - I was going to ask you where you found information that Mary (wife of William Dench) was a daughter of Robert and Jane (nee Burt) .................................. but I believe I have found the answer.

The following can be found in IGI with parents Robert Glasson and Joan or Jane Burt. Of these all are listed as Births except for Nicholas Burt Glasson which is a Christening:-

Mary Glasson - 07 Oct 1796 Kenwyn
Nicholas Burt Glasson - 07 Sep 1782 Kenwyn
John Glasson - Jan 1788 Kenwyn
Samuel Glasson - Dec 1804 Kenwyn
William Glasson - 18 Aug 1799 Kenwyn

If you check the Source Number for each of these you will find that it is Film Number 454998 and then if you go to the Library Catalog you will find the description of Film Number 454998 as:-

Whilst other information suggests that the link to Robert and Joan/Jane is logical I think that extreme caution should be excercised with this information until some evidence that is a little more credible and believable can be located!!

Baptisms for this family that can be substantiated from the Kenwyn Parish Register are:-

Nicholas Burt son of Robert and Jane Glassant bp. 7th September 1782
Robert son of Robert and Jane Glassant bp. 30th May 1784 (buried 15th August 1785 son of Robert)
Jane daughter of Robert and Jane Glassant bp. 25th December 1785
Robert son of Robert and Jane Glasson bp. 8th October 1787 (buried 22nd February 1791 son of Robert)
John son of Robert and Jane Glasson bp. 12th April 1789
William son of Robert and Jane Glasson bp. 19th June 1791 (buried 17th October 1791 son of Robert)
Robert son of Robert and Jane Glasant bp. 7th October 1792 (buried 26th July 1793 son of Robert)
Robert son of Robert and Jane Glasson bp. 6th February 1794

Those are all of the legitimate baptisms found in the Kenwyn Parish Register for this family.

With a little playing around I managed to find something more for Elizabeth. Seems that a 'normal' search won't find her but if you look for Elizabeth and enter 537383 in the Film Number Box you will find:-

Birth - 14 Jan 1801 Kenwyn
Burial - 27 Aug 1871
Father - Robert Glasson
Mother - Joan or Jane Burt
Spouse - Henry Tucker
Marriage - 18 May 1823

Well .............. at least we know the marriage is correct!

Lannanta - My database is not up to date with all the Robert Glassons so you may be able to discount anything I have to offer here.

But for the sake of having an input regarding the identity of Robert Glasson I will risk the slashing discounts.

Regardless of whether his age was recorded accurately when he was buried it would seem that there may be only two recorded baptisms between 1756 and 1765 for robert Glasson.

His age was recorded as 76 when he was buried 19th February 1837 so I would put his birth sometime during 1760. The two baptisms recorded in IGI are:-

31st August 1760 at Gwinear son of John and Mary
16th August 1761 at Camborne son of John

IGI/FamilySearch Members have very kindly offered the latter baptism at Camborne as being that of the husband of Jane Burt.
I somehow suspect that might be influenced by the fact that he was 'of Camborne' when he married!

Personally - I favour the former baptism at Gwinear for a couple of reasons.

1. It is in August 1760 which gives him every chance of being 76 when he died
2. His mother is recorded as Mary

In that great long list of children for Robert and Jane there are only three daughters. Unfortunately only the first can be absolutely verified by the Kenwyn PR but ..............

First daughter was Jane and quite obviously named for her mother.
But the second daughter we have is Mary which almost logically points to the mother of Robert.

However - the first son was named Nicholas Burt Glasson and undoubtedly named after Jane's father. Perhaps an indication of a recent demise?
We then have the first of four sons named Robert and then the next name used for a son is John.

One other thing for consideration - the third and last 'known' daughter of Robert and Jane was named Elizabeth yet from what I can find Jane's mother would have been Dorothy.

G'day mate - happy to toss it around with you to see if some answers can be found.

Things are starting to get busy over here with the onset of Summer and it is also fire extinguisher servicing time again. But I can manage to work around that to help find that speck of light for you.

It is handy having found an albeit dodgy reference to a birth for Elizabeth but now, as for all the later children of that family, we need to find a reliable source for the information.
