CT As discussed by email, I noted a family in the 1850 US Federal Census when I was looking for somebody else. The problem was that this family had been recorded as GLEASON. The person that caught my eye was Richard Gleason, aged 14, born in England, as were his parents John and Ellen. Some big leaps coming here ;D I went back to my births database and noted that a Richard GLASSON was baptised at Camborne on 11/3/1837 to John and Eliza GLASSON. From my marriage databse I found John GLASSON and Eliza SKEWES married in Camborne on 20/7/1836. I have this couple in my family history programme, and I have John as the son of Richard GLASSON and Margaret ROWE. I checked on some of the public family trees and they all seem to have John as the son of Charles GLASSON and Joanna WILLIAMS, but I think they are guilty of copying one another without proof - perhaps So back to Illinois, Jo Daviess, Vinegar Hill in 1850. John and Ellen (not Eliza) aged 36 and 34 respectively, Richard aged 14 and then the next child born in Illinois - Benjamin aged 7. Also younger children John, James and Elizabeth. Two important points here - Richard GLASSON and Margaret ROWE also had a son Benjamin. Second there is somebody else staying at this house in 1850 - H. SKEWOUS - aged 20, male, born in England. What do you think? Lannanta

CT It is starting to become clearer. I have found the family in the 1860 US Federal Census - under GLATSEN. There is no John as the head, but there is Eliza as the mother as opposed to her name being Ellen from 1850. Plenty of children including an 8 year old Margaret so I am pretty sure now that I have the correct family. What also helps is that the next door neighbours to this family in 1860 is the family of John seniors brother Benjamin Glasson. Lannanta

And then for a while it got a bit murky again.
I realised that it should have been reasonably easy to find 4 or so year old Richard travelling to the USA from England before the 1841 census.
Four year old Richard arrived in the USA on the 5th September 1840 from Liverpool. Mother was Eliza Glasson, but the other adult was 20 year old James.
At first I thought that I had got it all wrong. But then I realised why there was a large gap between the first born Richard, and the second born Benjamin. The father John, had gone to the USA to find work. And now he was being joined by his wife and son. And the James travelling with his wife Eliza, is his brother James.

You have been busy Mate! Looks like you have done well and have the job well in hand. If everything is progressing as well as it seems I will leave it with you for the time being but just give me a 'holler' if I can help. CT
