Morning CT
So the name came from the National Probate Calendar - Joseph Glasson, who died on the 24th March 1890 in River Thames. Now I think that it is a town called River Thames as opposed to the actual river - not sure.
FreeBMD shows Joseph as aged 37 - therefore birth around 1853.
In the 1891 census his widow Jane is found at 30 Beresford Street in Woolwich with three children; George, Jane and Louisa - aged 18, 17 and 14 respectively. It shows all four as born in Deptford, London.
Memory is failing me, but I could not find this family previous to the 1891 census.
And I cannot find them in the 1901 census, although I have trawled through the same area - funny thing is to date I have not been able to find the Pussic Hotel that the family had in 1891 at 30 Beresford Street - have found 31 onwards by searching on the neighbour.
But I am more interested in Joseph. The names look like families from Cornwall and I would like to know who he is. I am struggling to find a suitable marriage for Joseph that works in with George aged 18 actually being his son.
I would appreciate your thoughts.

Deptford is on the R Thames and used to be associated with shipbuilding. Woolwich is not normally described as being in Kent. It used to be.It`s part of Greater London and part of a London Borough. The "old" Kent County was south of the river. David,Kent UK

I have very limited census access at present. And the below may be way off the mark....
However, a search on the 30 Beresford Street Address for 1881 shows up a name with a Glasson link ..... IVEY???
And in 1881 No. 30 Beresford Street is the Duke Of Sussex Public House.
Lots of Iveys at that address in 1881; no Glassons; and not the forenames you're looking for......
Rather than list everyone here, I think you should find them under William H Ivey born 1832 born Devon.
And a search by address 30 Beresford St Woolwich 1891 shows it as still the Duke of Sussex pub; and again in 1901 - so the site you're using may possibly, perhaps, maybe have a transcription error, I don't know?

Also found this - which again may be wide of the mark: From London Borough of Lewisham archives, A/81/61/10 (Lewisham adjoins Deptford on its southern boundary, GoogleMaps or some such can probably demonstrate this): Counterpart lease by Charlotte Marison of Ravensbourne Park, Lewisham, and others to Joseph Glasson, fishmonger, of 83 Deptford High St. 7 yrs £30 p.a. 14 November 1875 At that address in 1881 I see a Joseph Glasson 10 years older than the age given for the man who died 1890 in the Thames; he is a widower with various children including a 4 year old girl. Also present is a Jane Amery age 29 plus daughter Jane 7; there is a possible 1882 marriage of Glasson~Amery. And there is a George Amery age 9 visitor at another Deptford household in 1881. Could the children in 1891 household be a combination of Glassons & Amerys?? And the death age of Joseph Glasson be wrong by a decade? ? Maybe? Or has my imagination gone totally wild? ;D Sue

Lannanta - If the Joseph that Sue has found is the same man you are enquiring about then you will need to have a Matthew Davern Glasson in your collection. It is a very strange marriage however:- Joseph Glasson of full age, widower, fishmonger of Holy Trinity Newsington, son of Matthew Davern Glasson, tailor married Jane Avery formerly Care, unmarried (over spinster erased) of Holy Trinity Newington daughter of Charles Care, boiler maker, 25th October 1882 at Trinity Church, St Mary Newington, Surrey Witnesses - John Joseph Wilson, Mary Ann Brown Joseph was born at Greenwich according to the 1881 Census and Matthew Davern Glasson was also the name of his grandfather. Joseph was first married to Mary York 3rd July 1864 at Deptford, St Nicholas. No sign of a baptism for Joseph as yet and no marriage or baptism for his father or grandfather - but then I have only tried FamilySearch so far! Assuming that we are on the right track then the family in 1851 is at Greenwich (which looks like 'freenuh or freenuk' in the original! Matthew Glassen, head, mar, 33, tailor, born London Emma do., wife, mar, 30, born Greenwich Joseph do., son, 8, Greenwich Matthew do., son, 5, Greenwich Emma do., daur, 1, Greenwich Matthew was widowed by 1861 and with no additional children apparent it would seem that Emma died probably soon after the 1851 Census. In 1861 Matthew stated his birthplace as Greenwich. Let's see how we go with that lot. CT

Emma Glasson of St Thomas's Hospital, Southwark age 32 was buried at St Thomas, Southwark 20th July 1853.
Matthew Glasson died at Lewisham Workhouse age 67 10th November 1885 and was buried at Lewisham Cemetery.
Cannot find a death/burial record for Joseph as yet unfortunately but I can confirm that the Image for his death shows the age as 37 as indexed.

Lannanta - you cannot find the 'Pussic' pub because it is not the 'Pussic'. It is actually the Duke of Sussex but I can verify that it is not easy to read. So at this point I agree with Sue that the age is incorrectly recorded in the Death Index and this is obviously the family described in the previous posts by Sue and I. If you want to find Matthew Davern Glasson in the 1841 Census - GOOD LUCK! And if you want to find any other information about him at the moment - GOOD LUCK! I have tried without luck so far and your guess is as good as mine regarding how he will appear in the 1841 Census! For the baptisms you might have to try the CityArk site. CT

CT and Sue Well that was a blast I cannot see Matthew as being a Cornish Glasson somehow - it is not a name that appears in the family that I can recall. I will have a look and see if I can locate him. Appreciate your efforts. Lannanta

Hi Sue
In Ancestry it is recorded in the search engine as Glasier. Aged 25, tailer, Prospect Place, Greenwich. Born in the county of Kent. I think that he might be a lost cause for me as I cannot see this family getting back to Cornwall.

A correction has been submitted to Ancestry and Mathew Glasier should soon appear as Mathew GLASIN which is what it really looks like. Given the family is in Kent I would not discount totally any connection with Cornwall so it is certainly worth gathering all the information together even if you put it aside for sometime in the future. But it is also worth considering a look through the CityArk records. cityark.medway.gov.uk/query/results/?Mode=Search&PathList=/Z4a_Medway_Ancestors/%0A&SearchWords=&DateList=This does not cover all of Kent so there are no guarantees and also there is no indexing. On the other hand there is the Kent OPC site and I can say that at least some of Deptford is covered:- www.kent-opc.org/index.htmlJust click on the Parish List and go from there. CT

Lannanta I forgot to mention that the only other occurrence of the name DAVERN that I have goes back to an old favourite subject - QUICK. The 1747 marriage at Kilshannig by Mallow, County Cork in Ireland of John QUICK to Honour DAVERN. CT
