CT Another poser for you. I was looking at the marriage of Catherine Glasson to George Roberts in Breage in 1826. So I started the normal way and tried to find Catherine Roberts in the census and I think that I found George and Catherine and two children in the 1841 census at Breage. The children were said to be 20 years old which makes them a little old but there could be many reasons for that - e.g. previous marriage, rounded to the wrong age etc. However I could not find them in a later census and the information from 1841 is a bit limited. But working on the rounded age of 35 for Catherine I looked at my baptism database and could not see a candidate even close. The only family I could find in that area at that time was the family of Edward and Eleanor nee Eustice - and no child named Catherine. But I noticed that Edward and Eleanor had a grand daughter named Catherine which got me wondering. So I checked the OPC database and found a Catherine Glasson baptised at Germoe in 1802 (resident in Breage) - just perfect I thought. Parents - Edward and Catherine I just knew straight away that I would not have a marriage for an Edward and a Catherine - and I didn't. Must be Edward and Eleanor - surely??? Do you have copy of the baptism records for Germoe? Lannanta

Lannanta - it clearly reads 'daughter of Edward and Catherine'. This is one of five baptisms occurring on July 18th that are enclosed in brackets and marked 'Breage' indicating the Parish of origin. Looking at children baptised to Edward Glasson around this time and I think it is clear that we have another case of incorrect information being entered in the register. I would suggest you are quite safe in assigning Catherine as a daughter of Edward and ELEANOR. CT

Even more strange! George Roberts was recorded as a bachelor when he married Catherine which would seem to rule out the previous marriage theory. But I can find no record anywhere of any children baptised to a George Roberts with wife Catherine! And I can find no George son of George baptised around the right time either. No idea at the moment, mate.

It is possible that my Catherine and George Roberts are not the ones in the 1841 census. I am not too bothered with that at the moment as my project is identifying the marriages.
I agreee with you that Catherine can only be the daughter of Edward and Eleanor given the information available at the moment, and that is how I will record it until something else surfaces.

Actually I am quite proud of myself. I started to look for a marriage between Eleanor Glasson and Thomas Rodda. First looking at Ludgvan where all the children were hatched but ended up from the 1851 census learning that Eleanor was from Crowan. Eventually I found Eleanor Rodda in the 1841 census with George and Catherine Roberts at Hendra Crofts. Sisters ;D
Eleanor baptised at Crowan in 1792 and Catherine at Germoe in 1802. Ages given as 50 and 35 years respectively - rounded for 1841.
Yippee doo.

Well done mate! Interesting what can turn up when you are looking for something else. I think I have mentioned in the past that quite a number of my mysteries have been solved by similar 'accidents'. And now .... where was I ............................ ah, yes, the Pearce family of Lelant! CT
