Edwin Glasson

Edwin was another of those Glasson census entries that deserved a closer look but has been on the backburner for quite a long time.

He easily appears in the 1861 to 1881 censuses (born about 1856 in Truro) (therefore son of John Henry Glasson and Elizabeth Coad) at St Austell, but curiously is married in the 1881 census, but away from home.

A bit of a look at FreeBMD for a marriage and the most likely lady is Eliza Isaac.

Originally I did not have a record of him in the 1891 census and only a brief note fron the 1901.

So I looked today and in 1891 he appears to be in Wales, with Eliza and two children. The youngest girl is clearly Florence, but the older girl is perhaps Kezia or the like - mother and daughters all born in Devon.

But is there a reason why I cannot find their births in FreebMD, or am I not thinking outside the square?

How about I work through piece by piece and see if I can find an answer to that question.

From the 1861 Census I would think that John Henry was the same John Henry baptised 26th March 1826 at Kenwyn son of Robert Glasson and Mary Prout Reynolds.

Something you have not mentioned but which perhaps confirms the name of Edwin's wife:-

The 1891 Census at Canton, Glamorgan, Wales shows Edwin's wife as Eliza, age 34, born Chittlehampton, Devon so there is further confirmation of her identity.

As you say, the youngest daughter is clearly Florence. The elder daughter's name is not clearly spelt but the way 'Eliza' was written I would suggest we are looking at 'Kerzia' which would in fact be 'Kezia'.

AND - they do not appear in FreeBMD.

I have looked up the birth entry for Eliza Isaac just to confirm the Registration District for Chittlehampton which is South Molton.

BTW Eliza was registered S. Molton December Qtr 1858 Vol 5b Page 431

The daughters cannot be found in South Molton R.D. by searching without the surname either.

As a last resort I have tried a search of the images from September Qtr 1882 through September Qtr 1883 looking for Kezia and there is absolutely no sign.

Most unusual for that time to have one birth not registered ..... but for two births in the same family to be not registered is something else again!

Perhaps it could only happen in Devon!

And it looks like Kezia might have been lost in the Bogs or on the Moors because after 1891 there appears to be no further trace of her!

Great minds think alike. We have come to the same conclusion and have gone down the same roads to get there, although I did not think of looking for Eliza nee Isaac in 1881.

I do remember thinking of the Quick family when I got to Sth Molton - although I seem to remember that Florence was born elsewhere in Devon and I might have been looking in the Exeter district. In any event I think they are not recorded - yet.

A longshot for you to consider

Florence Mabel 1889 Barnstaple (the Reg District for Bickington) I know it is rather late but could the year have been read as 89 instead of 84 when the records were written up?

I can't find any other Florence in 1901 and this one appears to marry in 1910 in Poole, Dorset.

I cant find a Kezia anywhere.

Londoner - I saw that entry also ..... and wondered.

But my thoughts were on 'late registration' rather than a misinterpretation of information when the indexing was done.

And being five years late I dismissed the thought.

The fact that no sign at all can be found of Kezia may have had something to do with that decision also.

Looks like GALE is the right marriage for Florence Mabel.

I have found two children in FreeBMD both registered at Poole:-

Charles H Gale December Qtr 1918

A request has been submitted for a check of the 1911 Census to see if any information can be located to confirm the identity of this Florence Glasson.

At least we might be able to eliminate her.

Right then - I believe Florence Mabel can be eliminated.

Her age matches the 1889 birth which comfortably eliminates any possibility of late registration.

I knew it was a longshot but didn't have access to 1911 to confirm - well sleuthed!

I have been informed that there appears to be no trace of Edwin, his wife or his daughters in the 1911 Census.

Immigration must be a possibility but I have also not checked deaths as yet. (I did check marriages and can find nothing that looks like either of the daughters.)
