I am having a bit of trouble with my Catherine Curnows. I'm looking at say born before 1740 right now....
I can get some to a wedding readily; with the main trouble being in the middle......
I have (numbers only for ease of reference further on...):
1.Catherine who married John Thomas alias Polmere @ Ludgvan 10 Dec 1658, I believe daughter of Thomas Curnow/Joan Martin
2.Catherine daughter of Thomas Curnow/Joan Painter, m John Martin, had many children 1703 -1723. Mentioned in brother Peter's will.
3.Catherine bptzd 17 Oct 1693 Towednack to David Curnow/Jane Roberts. Father died 1738, leaving her, unmarried age 45, £10.
4.Catherine bptzd 21 July 1700 @ Towednack to Peter Curnow & Jane Harris; left £60 in father's will, he being buried 1736, at which time Catherine was 36.
5.Catherine bptzd 24 Nov 1703 Towednack to Robert Curnow/Wilmot Rosewall; said to be named in father's will of 1744 as married to Matthew Harvey
6.Catherine bptzd 19 May 1717 to Richard Curnow & Bridget @ Lelant
7.Catherine bptzd 12 Jun 1720 @ Towednack to Matthew Curnow & Mary/Margery
8.Catherine bptzd 29 Sep 1724 Towednack to Michael Curnow/Mary Ninnes. Father dies 1739
9.Catherine bptzd 25 Feb 1725 Ludgvan to Henry Curnow/Mary
10.Catherine bptzd 11 Nov 1727 to David Curnow/Catherine Trewhella
I have remaining marriages as follows:
A.4 Feb 1736 at Paul to Matthew Williams (Catherine of Towednack)
B.4 Jan 1738 at Towednack to Matthew Stevens
C.3 Jun 1744 at Morvah to James Trembath (both persons of this parish)
D.19 Oct 1751 at Phillack to John Wearn
E.4 May 1754 at Towednack to Peter Care
F.23 Nov 1757 at Ludgvan to Benjamin Chelew
and burials of Catherine Curnows :
23 Aug 1771 @ Paul - I would expect this to be Catherine bptzd 6 Mar 1769 at Paul to Phillip & Elizabeth, although I agree the burial doesn't say child
10 Nov 1772 @ Towednack
18 Nov 1791 @ Madron
27 Nov 1811 age 66 @ Towednack – so born c 1745 therefore none of the above therefore presumed a widow, perhaps of a Thomas Curnow.....
I have omitted 3 that do appear to be child deaths.
..........................................................................................................
So:
Catherines 1, 2 and 5 above have definite husbands.
Catherine 3, unmarried age 45 in 1738 daughter of David Curnow & Jane Roberts, I would suggest is buried at Towednack in 1772, when she would have been 79.
Catherine 4 I believe would be the bride at Paul in 1736 of Matthew Williams, marriage A. I say this because that was the year her father died and she had a substantial dowry left to her; her sister Anne was already at Paul, married to Phillip Curnow, and Phillip & Anne's son Phillip eventually had a child Catherine, 1769 – 1771 per burial above.; and the marriage between Matthew Williams & Catherine Curnow seems to have produced only one child, Catherine baptized 26 April 1741 privately at Paul, which fits with a late-ish marriage.
That leaves 5 Catherine baptisms, 5 Catherine marriages, & a burial at Madron (which could be of a Catherine wife of a Curnow). Sounds solvable, but I'm not sure …..!
Marriage B at Towednack to Matthew Stevens 4 Jan 1738:
appears to produce children at Zennor -
Andrew 15 March 1740
Martha 11 March 1742
Charity ? ? 1744
Matthew 30 Dec 1746
If this is the right Matthew Stevens, there is a burial at Zennor for him 13 Jan 1772 at Zennor, which equates to the baptism 5 Nov 1713 to Matthew & Martha at Zennor.
In turn this would make Matthew 25 at the 1738 marriage; Catherines 6 & 7 were old enough to marry. I would suggest it was Catherine 7 daughter of Matthew & Mary/Margery, as her family was at Towednack, the place of the marriage.
Marriage C at Morvah 3 Jun 1744 to James Trembath I have no clue; there is a tree out there that ascribes to them children James c 1744 Morvah; Edmund, Constance, Edmund & John all @ Madron between c 1747 & 1755. All I can see is a John Trembath bptzd @ Morvah son of James 1 Jun 1755. IGI, unsourced, has Constance bptzd St Just/Madron 17 Jul 1748, & some similarly unsourced baptisms for Edmunds to a father James.
But blow me down, I see a burial at Morvah of Catherine Trembath widow age 78 on 7 Dec 1798 – that would mean a birth year of c 1720, which would strictly equate to Catherine 7 bptzd Towednack to Matthew & Mary/Margery........
I can't at present see other Trembaths marrying Catherines.... There was more than one James Trembath around, but there was a James Trembath buried at Morvah “of St Just” 26 March 1782 age 60 – thus birth c 1722.
So now I have the marriages A of 1736 & B of 1744 being perhaps either way round to Catherines 6 of 1717 or 7 of 1720.... Hmmm...
Moving to marriage D in 1751 at Phillack to John Wearn. I was thinking Catherine 9 baptized at Ludgvan to Henry Curnow & Mary was likely the bride on this occasion, what with sister Avis marrying a Wearn, Charles, out there in 1743.
The children of marriage D Phillack 1751 seem to be:
William Wearn bptzd 23 Nov 1754 Phillack
George Wearn bptzd 28 Jun 1757 Phillack
and, oh: Michael Curnow Wearn bptzd 9 Nov 1760 Phillack.
Might that not indicate that the Catherine Curnow in this marriage could perhaps be Catherine 8 baptized 1724 at Towednack, the only surviving daughterof Michael Curnow & Mary Ninnes, Michael Curnow having died in 1739? And the one son Michael Curnow, Catherine 8's brother, marrying Ann Oliver at Phillack in 1756? I would have thought so........
That would leave baptisms of Catherine 9 1725 at Ludgvan to Henry & Mary, and of Catherine 10 1727 at Towednack to David & Catherine Trewhella. These 2 to match up with the marriages E 1754 at Towednack and F 1757 at Ludgvan.
Marriage E to Peter Care at Towednack 4 May 1754 produces the following children:
Peter bptzd 4 May 1758 Towednack
Catherine bptzd 30 Dec 1759 Towednack, buried 31 July 1763 Towednack
William bptzd 1 Aug 1762 Towednack
Jacob bptzd 31 Jan 1766 St Ives, of Towednack
Catherine bptzd ? Buried 1 Dec 1769 Towednack
Marriage F to Benjamin Chelew at Ludgvan 23 Nov 1757 produces these children:
William bptzd 6 Jan 1758 Ludgvan
Philadelphia bptzd 28 Oct 1762 Ludgvan
Catherine bptzd 26 Mar 1765 Ludgvan
Elisabeth bptzd 25 Mar 1765 Ludgvan
Benjamin bptzd 21 Nov 1773 Ludgvan
Catherine Chelew was buried at Ludgvan 7 Jun 1805 at the age of 81: that is a fit with Catherine 9 bptzd 1724 to Henry & Mary.
Thus, , I would see Catherine 9 bptzd Ludgvan 1724 of Henry Curnow & Mary married at Ludgvan 1757, acknowledging that she would be seriously pushing it to have a final child at the age of 48, although it could possibly be a late baptism; and thus Catherine 10 bptzd Towednack 1727 of David Curnow & Catherine Trewhella married at Towednack in 1754. She is buried at Towednack 25 Oct 1784.
If perchance one has read on this far ;D: does this make any sense? Is it fatally flawed? Has it all been sorted out before? Any views on the marriages B & C to Matthew Stevens & James Trembath? Are there other Catherines floating around this early that I have missed?
