G'day, my name is John.
I'm part of the OLDS family from Broken Hill NSW who originally came from St. Buryan Parish area in Cornwall.
During my research I've found that both my paternal and maternal sides of the family originally came from Cornwall.
It was quite by accident that I found the Penwith Genealogy site, whilst looking on the internet for records of my 3rd Great Grandparents William OLDS and Sabina LANYON who were married in St. Buryan Parish on 10 May 1812. They lived at Chynance (the house in the valley) at the head of the Penberth Valley.
William and Sabina had 3 daughters and one son. Their first daughter Martha OLDS was christened on 20 February 1814, Jane was christened on 24 September 1815, Anne was christened on 04 January but died on 06 January 1818, William Henry was christened on 24 January 1819 and Marianne OLDS was christened on 28 September 1823 all at St. Buryan.
If anyone has come across Martha, Jane and Marianne OLDS during their research, I'd really like to hear from them. I've been unable to find any record other than when they were baptised.
William and Sabina's son, William Henry OLDS, is my 2nd Great Grandfather, who with his wife, Elizabeth Grace DENNIS, and their 8 children arrivied at Port Adelaide South Australian on the ship LINCOLN on 03 December 1865. They moved to Moonta in South Australia, a former Copper mining town, and my Great Grandfather Edward Arnold (Ned) OLDS and his family moved to Broken Hill NSW, a Silver, Lead and Zinc mining town around 1910. Ned and is eldest son William Henry were Bootmakers by trade.
I found the thread "Phillimore Marriage Records" under Help, Look up Offers, the contributors are RobOats, Newlyn and cornismaid.
I thought they might have cracked the riddle of the parents of my 3rd Great Grandfather William OLDS, who I have thought to be William OLDS and Martha TREMBATH because the dates, places and names seem to match. But I've not been able to identify William and Martha's children.
Has anyone had any better luck in locating records with William and Martha's children.
Also, just recently, I've tracked down my maternal Bennetts side of the family as far as my Great Grandfather, Richard BENNETTTS was born on 20 June 1853 at Tavistock, the BDM record seems to be Vol 5b page 330 and his parents, Richard BENNETTS and Eliza OSBORNE who were married during March 1846 at possibly Truro, the BDM record being Vol 9 page 304.
If anyone has come across either the OLDS or BENNETTS family during their research I'd be grateful for any help.
I may be able to help anyone who is also researching the same families from the time these families arrived in Australia.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Warmest Regards,
John
