Whilst trawling through the Crowan Marriages I came across this one:-
24th February 1885 by Licence
Robert QUICK, of full age, miner of Towednack s/o John Quick
Emma LITTLEJOHNS, of full age, spinster d/o THOMAS Littlejohns
I found that I had two potential Robert Quicks in the database.
1. Born Towednack c.1846 son of John Quick and Elizabeth Berryman
2. Born Towednack c.1849 son of John Quick and Mary Ann (nee Osborn)
I know nothing more at the moment about the first of these but the second Robert died at Long Gully near Bendigo in 1907 so I think it is probably he who married Emma.
Robert and Emma had left England before 1891 so I turned to the Victorian BDM Index.
And this is where the Classic Case comes in!
Victorian Death Index 1921-1985
Surname - QUICK
Given names - Emma
Father - Littlejohn WM
Mother - EMMA JEFFERY
Death Place - BGO (Bendigo)
Age - 83
Year - 1941
Reg Number - 18840
Event - D
Note that her father is recorded as WM and her mother as EMMA.
The marriage record clearly shows her father's name as THOMAS!
And the only likely Marriage record I can find is in FreeBMD:-
June Qtr 1855
Redruth R.D.
Vol 5c Page 377
Thomas LITTLEJOHNS
Eliza JEFFERY
The informant at the Death got the names of both parents wrong!
The 1861 Census shows Emma Littlejohn age 4, birthplace Camborne, living at Laity, Camborne with her parents Thomas and Eliza Littlejohn and three siblings.
Another reminder to be very wary of what you find recorded on a Death Certificate!
BTW -
Emma Quick was buried at Bendigo Cemetery
10th September 1941
Section MON M7 Grave No 10173
Robert Quick was buried at Bendigo Cemetery
23rd August 1907
Secton MON M7 Grave No 10173
That should about prove the link I reckon!
Robert died at Long Gully in 1907 age 57.
Parents - John Quick and Mary Osborne
Reg. No. 8963
And just little more!
Robert and Emma must have travelled to Australia very soon after the marriage.
Edith Osborne Quick d/o Robert and Emma born 1886 Sandhurst (near Bendigo)
Florence Osborne Quick d/o Robert and Emma born 1887 Sandhurst
