Hi! I fell in love with Cornwall as a child and little did I know my ancestors were Cornish. Made perfect sense.. now its a case of tracking them all down! he he.. Great to find your forum ... although not living in Cornwall its nice to feel connected! Would anyone have any info relating to the George family? Ive traced William to St Ives where he lived with his family, wife Martha and children in the 1800's. His first wife was Mary Curnow and Martha's maiden name was Chegwidden. Can't seem to find a link to his life before marriage? Think farming and St Buryan seems to be the place of birth on census, however not listed as birth anywhere? Possible link to Sennen or Sancreed? Any help would be fab!! Thanks.

Hello Kezza and welcome to Penwith Genealogy. I see you have also posted details of your problem in the Queries section so I will take a look there and see what help I can offer. Curnow is a name I have done a lot of work on so I would hope to be able to offer some answers and I am also currently working on the St Ives registers. And I believe I have a little on the George family. CT

Hi everyone. I am new to this site and wonder if anyone can help me please? I have been told that my great grandfather Robert Hichens was 1st cousin to Joseph Reseigh from Mousehole who was captain of the Scillonian from 1931 - 1953. Robert Hichens was Quartermaster on the Titanic when it hit the iceberg. I have also been told that Robert was part of the crew of the SS Minnehaha when it grounded off the Isle of Scilly in 1910. Does anyone know whether Robert Hichens was in fact on the Minnehaha. My research is drawing a blank so far. Thank you

Oops. Forgot to mention. Robert Hichens was born in Newlyn in 1882 and was part of a large fishing family. His parents were Philip and Rebecca and they had 10 children. They lived in Primrose Court, St Peter's Square which was condemned and demolished in the 30's.

Sallydog7 - I think I may have the answer for you although I will need to look into it a little more over the next day or so to be sure. From what I can see so far Robert Hichens' father and Joseph Reseigh's mother were siblings. Philip Hichens married Jane Richards at Paul 27th May 1749 Philip s/o Philip and Jane bp. 21st October 1855 at Paul Elizabeth Paul d/o Philip and Jane bp. 29th August 1858 at Paul Elizabeth Hitchens (note spelling difference) daughter of Philip Hitchens, fisherman, married Obed Cary Reseigh 29th September 1877 at Paul Joseph Reseigh was born towards the end of 1884 but I have not found his baptism yet. (One of the things for me to look for over the weekend.) I cannot find another Elizabeth of the right age in the Census with Philip as her father so it is looking promising. Will leave it at that for now and see what more I can find tomorrow. CT
