Francis Thomas Glasson

I have been working on a Glasson family and I am having some difficulty getting it into perspective.

I believe it starts with Robert Glasson and wife Eleanor Thomas who married in Crowan in November 1770. They had a number of children (11) among whom was a certain William Glasson who married Lystra Granvil - and they had a son called Thomas Love Glasson, baptised about 1805.

Robert and Eleanor also had a son Thomas Love Glasson and he was baptised in Cubert in 1790 which I guess is a good way to link the two couples together. However, Robert and Eleanor also had another Thomas Glasson baptised at Cubert in 1788 and I have not found a burial for him.

In the 1841 and 1851 census there is a certain Francis Thomas Glasson who if you believe his age in the 1851 census was born around 1788/89 in Cubert. I cannot find any information on his baptism which is unusual because there does not seem to be a shortage of Cubert baptisms.

So I am thinking to myself that Francis Thomas Glasson is the son of Robert and Eleanor and he is actually the Thomas entry of 1788 at Cubert.

I would appreciate any thoughts.

There was a baptism of a Francis Thomas Glasson 26.5.1815 St Allen
Parents were William and Lystra.

Also a burial for Francis Thomas Glasson 16.5.1838 Cubert - Francis was
born 1766.

A Thomas Glasson baptism 1788 place unknown and burial 8.5.1790 Ludgvan.

Just some Glasson info which has come up after a very quick search.

More help is available from the Cubert Parish Register ............ and it shows that the person who submitted the entry for IGI was in error.

The entry actually reads:-

Still working my way through the Cubert PR but I can see where the problem occurred with the IGI entry for Francis Thomas Glasson.

There is a section of the PR on RecordSearch that is the original fragmented pages which is followed by a transcript.

In the Transcript the lower left corner of the page is torn away leaving the entry for FTG appearing as:-

___is Thomas S. of Robert etc.

After working my way through the baptisms I have a slightly more complete list of childrey for William and Lystra Glasson.

It is difficult as there are two parts to the baptisms as indicated above.
There are fragmented pages of the original which are followed by an early transcript which itself is also fragmented in parts.

But a combination of the two has produced some results that either cannot be found in IGI or add information to the IGI entries.

I have a total of five children confirmed with a sixth probable.

Child 1
The first child was baptised in 1797 but the entry is lost in the fragmentation of the original register.
In the Transcript this is the last entry on the page which is also fragmented at the bottom and all that remains is:-

The date is the third baptism for 1797 with the first occurring in February and the secon possibly March.

Child 2
Eleanor baptised 18th August 1799 was relatively easy.

Child 3
Betsy Glanvil baptised 3rd May 1802.
The first part of her name is all but gone from the original but is intact in the Transcript.

Child 5
Thomas Love baptised 14th January 1805.
IGI only shows the year 1805 but the complete date is readable in the original PR.

Child 6
IGI shows only that a daughter of Wm and Lystra Glasson was baptised in March 1808.
The Original PR however clealy shows that LYSTRA Glasson daughter of William and Lystra was baptised 13th March 1808.

And now you are wondering why there is no Child 4!

Well ................ wonder no longer! ;D

After some careful reviewing of the pages of this PR I have now determined that this is actualy Child 1.

And I believe the name is Wm.

The fragments of the original register have been transferred to another volume and 'repaired' to the pages as part of the Preservation Process.

In this case the page has been preserved out of order so that it looks like the entries should be for about 1800-1804.

The Preservation Process, in simple terms, basically involves 'pasting' the fragments of the original pages onto the page of a new book and then a page number is pencilled in.

In this case it is page 10 and immediately to the right is page 11 with the entries for 1804 and 1805 but a comparison of the entries on page 10 with IGI and then with the early Transcript shows that the entries are actually from 1797.

The child is definately 's. of Wm & Lystra Glafson' and the year is definately 1797.

I am near enough to certain the month of baptism is March but the day cannot be read.

I am also as sure as possible that the name is Wm.

The list of children for William and Lystra Glasson at Cubert is now:-

Eleanor bp. 18th August 1799
Betsy Glanvil bp. 3rd May 1802
Thomas Love bp. 14th January 1805
Lystra bp. 13th March 1808

Lannanta - here is another little twist for you.

The original is fragmented and mostly unreadable but the Transcript for the baptisms at Cubert in 1779 is very interesting.

Robert son of John and Mary Clemow was baptised 5th April 1779

Alongside this entry are the names of two Churchwardens.

And one of those Churchwardens - FRANCIS T GLASSON

The date is extremely difficult to read but looks like it might be 21st January.

Elizabeth wife of Robert Glafson of Newlyn buried January 1796

If there are any more up to 1812 then I simply cannot read them.

You have done good work with that. I noted that the burial in 1796 was for an Elizabeth and not an Eleanor - interesting as there was a second Robert over at Kenwyn.

Preoccupied at the moment as you can guess. My linemen have been in Christchurch area today restoring power after the earthquake early this morning. Some amazing and awe inspriring effects from the tremors and lots of raw emotion as you could guess. It is bedtime for me.

I had considered sending an email but thought you would be preoccupied one way or another.

This Cubert stuff is just about as bad as Crowan so not easy to work with.

However I did check that entry for Elizabeth a number of times and there appears no way that it could be Eleanor.

The Francis T Glasson situation has me intrigued and I think it could do with some work although I have come up with one slight problem.

Some time back Newlyn supplied the following which I would guess comes from Findmypast:-

I have just checked the Cubert Burials and als FreeBMD and there is absolutely no sign of this event!

Seems obvious there is something in Findmypast but ......

Carrying on with Robert here too - because an article in the Manchester Times in February 1834 ties them together...

On the 7th instant at Cubert, Cornwall, aged 84, Mr Robert Glasson, for 63 years a member of the Methodist Connexion. On the 17th Ultimo (month before), aged 84, Mrs Glasson, wife of the above. They have left behind them 80 descendants, of three generations. On the 4th instant, at St Mewan, aged 62, Mr Robert Glasson, eldest son of the above Mr and Mrs Glasson.

So the seniors would be Robert and Eleanor..... but there is no death or burial in 1834 for an Eleanor... but there is one for Susanna - 19th Jan at Cubert.

You start to win and then it sets you back a bit.

Lannanta - it is certainly written as 'Susanna' but at age 85 it is, in my opinion, most certainly Eleanor.

She was baptised at Gwinear 30th January 1748 (Old Style) so the burial at Cubert 19th January 1834 is an almost perfect match. The very next burial at Cubert was that of Robert Glasson.
