Hello,
For once a query that's on this side of the Civil War! ;D
I have a John Davis born/bapt 1797 Paul to John Davies (presumed) & Mary Bowling.
Now the puzzle,
I have a John Davis who was a cooper at Newlyn.
1841 census aged 40 married to Elizabeth (25) with children Owen and Elizabeth- living at Fore Street Newlyn.
Elizabeth (wife) Elizabeth James.
I have a John Davis who was a Lighthouse keeper.
1851 census
John Davis (Mariner) aged 53 born Paul (would be spot on) married to Mary with daughter Catherine (15) at Under Chapel Yards. This John went on to be a lighthouse keeper and is on the 1861 census at Coinage Hall Street with Mary and Catherine. I haven't been able to find a marriage for this couple yet.
Now people seem to be appearing and disappearing from the census so what happened to John the cooper? On the 1881 census a John Davies aged 34 married to Margaret J appears as a master cooper, living at Prospect Place and born in Newlyn. Margaret is Margaret J. Harvey and John Davies jnr is the son of (presumably) John the cooper senior and Elizabeth James.
If anyone has more information on this family/these families I would be very grateful as I am getting in a mix up with these. My own gut feeling is that John Davies the mariner/lighthouse keeper was the son of John Davies and Mary Bowling.
However there is an added twist.... on the 1891 census John Davies the cooper (junior) is living at Belle Vue, where my Grandfather was born 30 years later. I do think that they are all related some how but I'll need a wig soon from all the head-scratching I'm doing!
