I have a Charles Quick born 1852 son of Matthew Quick and Alice Nankervis and I have a note that he died in 1865 of smallpox as did 3 other of Matthew and Alice's children. The problem is in the 1871 Census there is a Charles Quick married to Elizabeth Ann Cocking living in Back Road St Ives both aged 20 years. I have a marriage date of December quarter 1870 for Charles Quick and Elizabeth Ann Cocking. Is this a different Charles Quick or is the death of Charles son of Matthew and Alice that I have an error? The other children of Matthew and Alice I have dying in 1865 of smallpox are, Dionsyius, William Henry and Elizabeth Regards Sarch

Hello Sarch
I agree with you and believe it to be correct.
I believe this Charles to be the son of Charles Wedge Quick and Elizabeth nee Nicholas, born at St Ives around 1850.

Thanks Lananta
Still on the Charles Quick front another mystery
Charles Wedge Quick son of Elizabeth Jane Quick (unmarried) grandson of Charles Wedge and Elizabeth nee Nicholas is living in 1881 census with Job Stevens and is his nephew?
Any ideas on how Charles W Quick is related to the Stevens' family?

Hi Sarch I do not know but CT might. Maybe his father was a STEVENS given that he was illegitimate? In the 1891 census Charles is still with this family, although the head of the household is John P. Stevens. Lannanta

Hi Sarch
These burial/death dates for the two adults do not quite seem to fit - at least for me anyway.
If Elizabeth Jane died in 1913 then I show her as having to be 63 years of age.
When Alice died in 1918 then my records would show her age as 41 years of age.
Are you able to check these?

Quite correct Lannanta and I have a record which shows that he was baptised at St Ives 30th March 1851. (The transcript I menioned yesterday.) And now for the complicated link to Job Stevens! It is possible that I have another link in the chain missing and it may be that the father of Charles Quick was a Stevens. But the link as 'nephew' to Job and Cordelia Stevens' is not quite so direct. If you look at the ages of the parties involved it is quite plain that the 'standard' uncle/nephew relationship could be possible. Job Stevens was 77 and Cordelia 72 while young Charles Quick was only 9. Job Stevens married Cordelia Pearce at St Ives 13th November 1825 Amongst their children were Cordelia and John Pearce Stevens (in the 1881 Census as John T). Cordelia Stevens married John Rowe at St Ives 17th March 1849 They had a daughter Alice Stevens Rowe born 1851 at St Ives. Alice Stevens Rowe then married John Harvey Pearce at St Ives 30th April 1871. This couple then had a daughter whom they named Alice Stevens Rowe about 1877. Alice Stevens Rowe (just mentioned) then married Charles Wedge Quick at St Ives 25th September 1898. That is the only connection I have at the moment. CT

Hi Lannanta I have the birth of Elizabeth Jane Quick as about 1850 which in 1913 would make her about 53/54 years The ages of John Harvey Pearce and Alice Stevens Rowe I got from their marriage they were both born about 1852 and died 1918 which would make both their ages about 66 Marriage St Ives 30 Apr 1871 by Banns John Harvey Pearce 19 bachelor Fisherman of St. Ives (Father: John Harvey Pearce, Sawyer) Alice Stevens Rowe 19 spinster of St. Ives (Father: John Rowe, Fitter) Witnesses: Job Stevens, Emily Ann Pearce CT that was a most brilliant piecing together of how Charles Wedge is related to Job Stevens - I am extremely impressed BUT there must be/most probably is another link as this one only comes about with Charles Wedge Quicks marriage to Alice Stevens Pearce Regards Sarch

Lannanta - I think you may have misread the transcription. When you talk about the death of 'Alice' I believe you are referring to the wife of Charles Wedge Quick. If she had died in 1918 she would have been about 41. However the Alice recorded in that Death extract was Alice Stevens Pearce her mother who was born in 1851. I have no record of when Alice Stevens Quick died. CT

Sarch - I have only had a brief look at other possible connections between young Charles and Job Stevens but so far can find nothing obvious.
The most likely possibility that came to mind was that the 'nephew' actually related to John P Stevens and not to Job.
But that would only work if one of John's brothers were the acknowledged father of Charles.
On the other hand we must remember that the term 'nephew' was not always used as we know it today.

CT
I have been wondering if Charles Wedge Quick was not the natural son of John P Stevens and "nephew" was just a cover-up?
John P Stevens does not seem to have any children with his wife Charlotte?

CT Thomas Wedge Quick brother of Charles Wedge Quick married Jane Stevens daughter of Job Stevens - is this a possible connection to Charles Wedge Quick son of Elizabeth Jane Q? This probably only works if Job Stevens is the father of Job Stevens married to Cordilia Pearce or related in some other way? Sarch

Hi Sarch
Actually it wouldn't. She would have been 50 in 1900 and therefore 63 in 1913. ;D

Hi Lannanta
I found this post in the Cornish L archives from SuezanJames Titled Births Deaths Marriages St-Ives 1913 from the Times and Echo
7/2/1913 Mrs Edmund JEFFREY died on Sunday buried at Barnoon Cemetery Nee (NIXON_JAMES) son Hubert brother Arthur. Mr Thomas KING of lelant has been buried at Barnoon Cemetery died Saturday aged 61
Death of Miss Eliza Jane MATTHEWS daughter of James Matthews aged 29 sisters named as Bessie,Mary,Gracie. Brother James and Brother in Law James STEVENS Death of Mitchell WILLIAMS died Friday aged 36
Death of Miss Elizabeth Jane QUICK aged 63 she died on Thursday morning. Death of Elizabeth Ann Thomas aged 81 widow of the late Richard PEARCE died Tuesday am
There it is 63 there is probably a typo in the age of Elizabeth Jane Quick in Barnoon Inscriptions.
