Just how many 'cans of worms' do you have to open. ;D
When I first looked at your message i noticed something a little familiar but it did not quite register at the time.
My latest look has started all the bells ringing.
The initial thoughts I had were that I have not much information on St Agnes, Cornwall.
But there was always something nagging at my poor addled brain.
The name of 'Julia PENDER HICKS'.
It then occurred to me that "St Agnes" may not be the Parish near Truro and that it might, in fact, be the Island of St Agnes in the Isles of Scilly.
When I looked again and noticed the name of JULIA PENDER HICKS it almost confirmed to me that it would indeed have been the latter.
BTW - definition of a Scillonian = 2000 alcoholics clinging to a rock. ;D (This from my cousin Gail when I was there in 1994.)
Where you find the name "... Pender Hicks" it is most likely going to revert back to the Scillies and this then makes this little project more interesting.
I think you are going to find that, in some way or other, we have some common relationships here. ;D
The Scillies are full of Penders and Hicks and a relation of mine married Annie Mortimer Hicks in London in 1898.
Annie Mortimer Hicks was the daughter of William PENDER HICKS and Eliza Ann (nee MORTIMER).
William PENDER HICKS (according to my information) was born at St Agnes, Isles of Scilly, about 1843.
His parents were John and Charlotte Hicks. (Keep this in mind
)
The 1861 Census for St Agnes, Isles of Scilly, shows the following:-
Higher Town, St Agnes
John Hicks, head, mar, 52, boatman, Scilly, St Agnes
Charlotte do., wife, mar, 52, Scilly, St Agnes
JULIA P do., daur, unm, 21, tailoress, Scilly, St Agnes
Emily P do., daur, 9, scholar, Scilly, St Agnes
Osbert do., son, 6, scholar, Scilly, St Agnes
(On either side of this family are more Hicks families who are, more than likely, related
)
I believe the Julia P Hicks highlighted above to be the one to which you refer.
The 1851 Census for St Agnes, Isles of Scilly
John Hicks, head, mar, 41, mariner, St Agnes Scilly
Charlotte do., wife, mar, 41, St Agnes, Scilly
William do., son, 7, scholar, St Agnes, Scilly
Stephen do., son. 3, St Agnes, Scilly
Where William and Stephen were in 1861 I am yet to determine but it appears extremely likely that the origins of this conversation have brought together some more 'distant relatives'. ;D
Whilst yet to pursue the family properly, I would be thinking that Charlotte Hicks was a PENDER by birth.
I have tried but cannot find a marriage for John HICKS to Charlotte.
Certainly IGI does not have it.
But another point I need to make regarding records for the Isles of Scilly.
The only extant records for Parish Registers begin about 1724 with all records prior to that being lost.
Will leave it at that for now and I am sure I will get some interesting responses. ;D
