Here is an interesting one for perusal.
From the information I have I believe the following to be correct - however I would welcome input and corrections if there is/are any.
When I visitied the CRO in 1994 I went through all the relevant PR's that I could find in my search for details on the name of TREWHELLA (var.)
I found, amongst others, this very confusing entry:-
Ann TREWHELLA BUCKINGHAM buried at St Ives 3rd March 1878, age 42.
It is only in the last month or so that I found the probable solution to her identity.
I started thinking about, and searching for, any person with 'Ann Trewhella' as Christian names and could come up with only one:-
ANN TREWHELLA PEARCE
She was bp. 10th July 1835 at St Ives d/o William PEARCE and Ann TREWHELLA
The date of Birth/Baptism equates to an age of about 42 when compared with the date of Burial of Ann Trewhella BUCKINGHAM so I began my little investigation.
I knew that Ann Trewhella PEARCE had married Thomas RICHARDS, mariner (s/o Thomas Richards, mariner) at St Ives 25th May 1862 from the St Ives PR.
I also knew (via an old source) that Ann Trewhella PEARCE had an illegitimate daughter:-
Martha Ada d/o Ann Trewhella PEARCE bp. St Ives 5th December 1860
I then found an interesting entry in the 1881 Census:-
Ann PEARCE, head, widow, 68, butcher, Ludgvan
Catherine CASH, daur, widow, 35, butcher assistant, St Ives
Kate CASH, Gdaur, 10, scholar, St Ives
EDWARD RICHARDS, Gson, 16, scholar, St Ives
Annie W CASH, Gdaur, 7, scholar, St Ives
This told me that Thomas RICHARDS and Ann Trewhella (nee PEARCE) had a son named Edward born about 1863/4.
But there are no other known children to this couple.
Then I found the following:-
George s/o George & Ann Trewhella BUCKINGHAM bn. 14th October 1871 and bp. 29th December 1871 at St Ives
I have not yet found the marriage of George and Ann and I have found no further children.
George BUCKINGHAM was a 'fruiterer' in 1871.
In 1881 (two different records) he was a 'fruiterer' and 'fish merchant'.
He was born in Birmingham about 1839 according to the 1881 Census.
Now - here is the really interesting part.
In the 1881 Census we find:-
Fore St, St Ives
Geo. BUCKINGHAM, head, marr, 41, fruiterer, Birmingham
Martha A. BUCKINGHAM, wife, marr, 21, St Ives
Geo. BUCKINGHAM, son, 9, St Ives
M. Ada BUCKINGHAM, daur, 3m, St Ives
Eliza BEARD, servant, 15, St Ives
St Ives OPR:-
Martha Ada d/o George & Martha Ada BUCKINGHAM bn. 8th January 1881 and bp. 2nd February 1881 at St Ives
The only reasonable solution I can arrive at is as follows:-
Ann Trewhella PEARCE has an illegitimate daughter (Martha Ada) in 1860
In 1862 Ann marries Thomas Richards, mariner
About 1863/4 they have a son named Edward
Thomas Richards dies/disappears leaving Ann a widow
Ann Trewhella RICHARDS then marries George BUCKINGHAM sometime before 1871
They have a son named George bp. October 1871
Ann Trewhella BUCKINGHAM is buried at St Ives in 1878
George BUCKINGHAM then marries Martha Ada PEARCE about 1880
Martha Ada BUCKINGHAM is born 1881 to George and Martha Ada
SO - After the demise of his wife, Ann Trewhella Buckingham (nee PEARCE), George BUCKINGHAM has then married his step-daughter Martha Ada PEARCE.
