And I had another think afterwards as well. If they had separated then it is quite likely George would have said he was single but what had me initially was that in both 1851 and 1861 George said he was born at Birmingham which is a good 25 miles or so from Shipston on Stour. As for the US marriage - whether divorced or not it was not uncommon. I have at least three examples in the various Trewhella families of the husband heading to the US but not returning. In each case the wives and families were still in Cornwall long after these blokes had remarried in the US! In fact one of the wives is consistently shown in the Census as 'married' long after her husband had remarried in the US. And then I think it was 1901 she finally decided he must have died so was recorded as a widow. Problem was that he was actually still alive!! I have seen it in a few other families as well. CT

Returning to the family of Thomas and Susanna Richards for a moment - I just found an error! Daughter Susanna was baptised in 1834 so her mother was buried just over 3 years later. But it appears there was another child who would have been born just a couple of months before Susanna died. There is no baptismal record for this child but I did find the following burial which seems to obviously belong to the family:- Michael Welch Richards of St Ives age 7 weeks buried 7th January 1837 at St Ives CT

I have just been looking at this family as well, only to find most of my stumbling blocks have been sorted out in this thread! A possible death record for George Buckingham snr is found in March Q 1914, Newport M RD, age of death given as 76, which fits nicely with the year of birth.
Oops...should have read thread more closley. That death record already mentioned!
Just another thing to add - Edward Richards, the son of Thomas Richards and Ann Trewhella Pearce is found in the 1911 census in the household of his aunt Mary Jane Sisley (ne Pearce). He is single and recorded as a mariner.
