Hi, I would dearly love to find the origins of my 3xgreat grandfather Samuel Williams. He married Jane Shugg on 4 December 1803 at Sithney with the register stating that they were both of this parish. Witnesses were Jane's brother, Samuel Shugg, Edward Bowden (her mother's surname was Bowden), Richard Shugg and William Pascoe. For ten years I thought that Samuel was born in Sithney 7 April 1786, the son of Henry and Margaret Williams, until I recently discovered that this Samuel died at Sithney in 1792!! I was crushed as I had also extensively researched his five sisters and made contact with their descendants. Since then I've been unable to find any clues as to my Samuel's origins other than to take a wild stab at any likely looking candidate in the vicinity. Taking some guidance from Samuel and Jane's children's names I've come up with a Samuel Williams born at Marazion on 29 August 1775 to Richard Williams and Mary Dingle. Has anyone, anywhere come across this Samuel in the hope that I can claim him?

This can be heartbreaking but also rewarding in the long term. But all the hard work you have done will help you with other areas of your research and should also be of help to others so don't feel too down about it. The first thing I notice is that on the initial information you worked from Samuel would have been just 17 when he married - quite possible but most unusual. Do you have any idea when Samuel died or have you found him in the Census? I will take a look at the records tonight but we should be able to help identify the correct Samuel for you. CT

The first child of Samuel and Jane was son Samuel baptised at Sithney in 1804.
Would I be correct that Richard baptised at Sithney in 1815 was also of this family??
Or do we have the possibility of yet another Samuel with a wife Jane?
Could you send a list of the other children and where they were born please as this should hopefully help me to help you.

Here is what I have been able to reconstruct so far which 'seems' probably to be your family. Children of Samuel and Jane Williams:- Samuel bp. 25th March 1804 Sithney Jennifer bp. 22nd December 1805 Helston Jennifer bp. 24th May 1807 Helston Samuel bp. 19th August 1810 Helston Mary bp. 21st March 1813 Helston (Samuel Williams, miller) Richard bp. 22nd October 1815 Sithney s/o Samuel and Jane Williams, miller, of St Johns (born 17th July 1815) bu. 23rd May 1816 at Sithney age 1 of St Johns Grace bp. 31st October 1817 Helston (Samuel Williams, miller) Richard bp. 29th March 1829 Helston (Samuel Williams, miller) (born 4th January 1821) Edward bp. 29th August 1824 Helston (Samuel Williams, miller) I have not yet been able to find burials for the first two children. However I have found what is probably the burial of Samuel. Samuel Williams of St Johns age 57 buried 23rd October 1831 Sithney St Johns is just on the Western side of Helston and in Sithney Parish so I would think it likely I have the right family and, therefore, the correct burial for Samuel. This puts his birth around 1774/5 which means he may well be the samuel baptised at St Hilary in 1775. You have identified the naming patterns with the use of the name Richard occurring twice also being a pointer to the 1775 baptism. Let me know how the above compares with what you already have and we can pursue it further from there. CT

Hello 'Williams' and welcome. I cant help with Samuel of Sithney, but was given some information years ago re Samuel WILLIAMS who married Mary PENDER at Sennen in 1749. I was told their son Richard was the same Richard WILLIAMS who married my Ann TONKIN at Madron in 1813. This turned out to be incorrect Samuel WILLIAMS, as advised to me, was the son of Samuel WILLIAMS and Jane WHITE, married St Just in 1719. Given the christian names I thought this info may be of use to you. I cant expand any further, as I'm on holiday in St.Just at the moment. I may have further info back home on a floppy disc (thats how long ago it was lol!) Best wishes and good luck, Mike

Thankyou everyone - especially for the burial of Samuel at Sithney. His age makes me feel that I am on the right track with his parents as Richard Williams and Mary Dingle. The children, Samuel, Jennifer, Jennifer, Samuel, Mary, Richard, Grace, Richard and Edward are all correct. I have never been able to find deaths for the first Samuel and Jennifer either. The first surviving child, Jennifer born 1807 married John Trembath (1805 Breage -1848 Breage - son of John Trembath and Thomasine Williams) in 1828. The second surviving child, Samuel born 1810 is my 2xgreat grandfather and he married Elizabeth Chesterfield Tubb at Helston on 4 April 1836. They emigrated to Australia in 1849 where they had five children. The third child, Mary born 1813 possibly married Thomas Perry (or Richard Thomas/James Perry) possibly at Gwennap on Christmas Day 1831. Whoever and wherever she married she died in Collingwood, Victoria, Australia on 10 October 1886 having spent 37 years in Victoria and having 6 definite children, although she possibly gave birth to 15. Thankyou for the death of the fourth child, Richard. The fifth child, Grace, I have found no further records for. The sixth child, Richard was born 4 January 1821 and married Mary Marks (1821 Constantine - 1870 Falmouth - daughter of James Marks and Christian Lugg) on 23 April 1843 at Helston and had 8 children. This marriage and their descendants was kindly sent to me by Ken Stewart who was researching the Marks family. Richard died in Falmouth in 1894. The seventh child, Edward is also still a mystery. Jane Williams nee Shugg died at Church Street, Helston on 10 December 1848. If anyone has "lost" a Williams in Australia, I have a huge database of over 200,000 Williams' and their families that I have been compiling for the past 10 years that I'm happy to hunt through.

Now that we have established the right family group I will try to take another look and see if I can find some more answers for you.
It may not be today but I will try.
