I was recently looking over the early St. Erth Trewhellas, to discover the reason for their lack in later years.
The two earliest Trewhellas are James and John, who are contemporary and I would assume are brothers. John has only three children at St. Erth: James, John and William. James moved to Towednack, eventually becoming churchwarden there. John ahs one child at St. Erth (1607) and vanishes. William has 4 children, and dies at St. Erth in 1644.
James, the younger of the two original Trewhellas, has children from 1583-1608. Only one of his children, Richard is found a St. Erth marrying and having children.
There is one loose Trewhella at St. Erth that I have not fit in yet:
Gilbert Trewhella.
In 1627 he marries Ann Bokilla and has three sons: Francis, William and Gilbert.
Any idea where he may fit in?
Incidentally, could the above be the Francis Trewhella who is mentioned in the 1681 Rosewall Deposition at Towednack?
Any idea

I still have Gilbert as a 'loose cannon' but the St Erth connection and also the fact he named a son Francis (first known in this family) has always been interesting. His three known children are Francis (1629) who must be his first child given the marriage occurred a year earlier, William (1632) and Gilbart (1636-1654). I do not know where the name Francis came from but must surmise that the name of William as second son might relate to the name of Gilbert's father. By my reckoning 'our' James Trewhella was bp. at St Erth in 1582 as s/o John and had brothers John and WILLIAM. William was baptised at St Erth in 1587 and appears to have married before 1615. I have four children for him at the moment with room for more:- Thomas bp. St Erth 1615 John bp. St Erth 1617 m. Blanch (3 known children?) Richard bp. St Erth 1622 (probably in 1641 ProtRets) Steven bp. St Erth 1626 bu. St Erth 1626 There is potential for Gilbert to fit in here but I do not know at the moment. With the Francis Trewhella thing - It appears, as with Christopher Trewhella of Helston/Wendron, that there must be connections but there is a helluva lot of work to be done to work it all out. Talking about 'all out' - it is 'Roger, Willco, Over and Out' for me tonight. Going to eat and watch 'Diamonds Are Forever' before I get to bed. ;D

I have seen it written tha tthe name "Francis" was a Cavalier name, and was often used to show sympathy with that cause. The West country was a hotbed of Royalist sympathies. I suspect you are going to find a lot more Francises than Olivers... I also note that the John who disappears after 1607 seems to have gone to Gwinear and had a big family there.

Will be looking into this a good deal more - as soon as I have time.
