I have been researching my family tree for several months now and have recently unearthed this great forum. Very happy to be here!
I am a Bennett now living in Sydney, Australia, with my ancestors being a long line of Bennatts in and around St Ives. There also seem to be a lot of Curnow, Pemberthy, Safeguard and Williams around when you shake the tree.
I'm still a little overwhelmed by the number of similar/identical christian and surnames that I am unearthing. I am using a great bit of software to organise everything: MacFamilyTree. I can use my mobile phone to update entries as needed and to-date I have 220 people in my tree. All are on my fathers side. A relative on my mothers side has a spreadsheet of several thousand, so I guess I have a long way to go.
Anyway, happy to be a member here. I am very interested in making contact and exchanging gedcom files with anyone with trees full of Bennatts, Curnow, Pemberthy, Safeguard and Williams ancestors.

Thanks David,
I would love a copy. My email is sbennett@tbig.com.au
I am happy to give others the results of my research - although I want to do more work on it. I haven't found it in the forums yet, but do people attach to posts gedcoms of their trees for the benefit of others?

Steve. Another Bennett (various spellings): John 1845, wife Grace Osborne Quick 1847,St Ives....but the various UK Census entries do not "add up". St Ives? Fowey?Wales? There may be a child, Hannah.. CT may have something to say on this!
David.

John BENNETT, master mariner, son of Benjamin was born sometime around or just before 1850 in Cornwall.
He married Grace Osborne Bennetts QUICK at St Ives 15th May 1873.
She was born at St Ives about 1847 d/o Richard QUICK and Grace Bennatts DOWNING.
I can tell you more, particularl yon the Quick side, but I think it might be wise to move this conversation to a more apprpriate section.
Perhaps one of the Parish Forums if there is one where your families were most prominent.

Hello Steve, I have researched both Bennatts and Safeguards. I am assuming from the mention of both surnames that you are researching the family of Philip Bennatts who married Christian Safeguard in 1731. Check the thread on the "St Ives investigations" forum entitled "Bennatts anyone?" for the early history of this family.
Which Bennetts emigrant to Australia are you descended from?

David, not sure where your John Bennett fits in but his wife Grace herself had Bennatts ancestry. Hers is the same family as the one mentioned in my last post. Check the Quick board for a thread about her for more information. I have a feeling I came across some other information just the other day about Richard and Grace and thei r family....

Thanks to everyone who has helped so far. This is a great little community to belong to. Much appreciated.
I am descended from Thomas Bennett (b. 1834 St. Ives) and Elizabeth Williams. They emigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1857 I think (but I don't know exactly when or on what ship). The family initially settled in Campbell's Creek, Victoria - very close to where my mother's family settled when they emigrated. Must have been all that gold they found during the rush. The Bennett line then spent a few generations in Fremantle, Western Australia.
I have traced the Bennett/Bennatts line back to James Bennatts (alias Cerrow, Kerrow, died Uny Lelant 1657). The trail then went cold but I have read in this forum that it is possible that James Bennatts father was not a Bennatts but a Cerrow because of patronymic surnames.
So I am excited to follow all the good leads you have given me!

Steve - could you give me a list of the children of Thomas and Elizabeth please? I don't know if there is a conflict with some of my information or whether we have two similar marriages. From my records:- Thomas BENNETT married Elizabeth WILLIAMS at St Peter's Church, Melbourne in 1852 (Victorian Pioneer's Index) The children I have are:- Elizabeth Mary 1854-1857 Collingwood Agnes Mary Williams 1857 Collingwood (married James LIHOU) Ann Caroline Williams 1859 Collingwood (married Philip JOHNS) Samuel Curnow 1861 Campbell's Creek (married Anastasia WALSH) Elizabeth Jane 1863 Campbell's Creek (married Henry SNELL) Phillip 1865 Macks Creek(?) Thomas 1869 The Loddon (married Rose McGHEE) CT

Hi again Steve,
Those names you gave certainly sound familiar.
I am pretty certain I have information at home on this family and their activities. Not sure how much of it you already have though.
As I recall it, more than one member of the same family came out to Australia, and around about 1852. And yes it was to Campbells Creek
Let me know if you want any further information -- by PM if you like.
