CT OK, a wee teaser for you. Who do you reckon the 30 year old Benedict Quick is that appears in the 1861 census for Wales, said to be of St Ives and is present on the vessel Lria at Neath Harbour in Glamorgan? Lannanta

My head hurts! A 'teaser' indeed. On age the obvious one was the son of Benedict and Mary (Ralph) but it 'should' not be him because:- 1. he was born in Ireland 2. in 1854 when he married he was a miner 3. in 1861 he is recorded at home with his wife Honor at Morvah However, in 1861 his occupation was 'Sailor (merchant service). The next one in my database was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth who married Alice Bryant in 1855 but:- 1. he was baptised in 1835 (probably born late 1834) 2. he was a shipwright 3. in 1861 he was at home in St Ives with his wife and children And that leaves the only other possibility - the son of John Quick and Nancy Gyles Paynter. The obvious problem here is that he was not born until 1840. But the points in favour are:- 1. he was a mariner 2. he was not in Cornwall in 1861 3. he 'drowned at sea' in 1867 So unless there is a Ben Quick who somehow managed to dodge having his birth and christening recorded and also managed to hide himself away somewhere when the Census takers were about in 1841 and 1851 I would have to suggest there was an error in recording his age in 1861. What do you think? CT

CT He does appear in the 1861 census, also in Wales, but on vessel called "Hope", the Master of which was his father John Quick. His age is given as 20 so he certainly fits the bill quite nicely. The 30 year old Benedict served under another Master - James Hammell. I have no answer at this moment. Lannanta
