Hi, I would be grateful for any information regarding a Richard Nicholas baptised 27.5.1849 who married a Mary nankervis on 30.5.1871 and their children, especially dobs. I know the youngest child was born in Cardiff - Edwin b. 6.1893
Richard had a brother James Tan who was baptised on the same day as his brother - cannot find any other info about him.
Many thanks ;D

Welcome to Penwith Genealogy. I am having a quick look at your problem to see what I can find but I may have to do more over the coming days. However - in 1901 Richard and Mary were at 215 Carlisle St, Roath, Cardiff. Richard was a Ship Steward and both he and Mary are recorded as having been born at Penzance. At this time they had five children living at home - all born Cardiff:- William age 16 Agnes age 14 James age 11 Winifred age 9 Edwin age 7 In 1891 they were also at Roath with the following children:- Mary E age 19 born Penzance John age 14 born Penzance Louisa age 12 born Penzance Lilly age 9 born Penzance William H age 6 born Cardiff Agnes age 4 born Cardiff James age 2 born Cardiff In 1881 Mary and the children were at Chancery Lane, Penzance. I expect Richard was at sea at this time. The surname was recorded as NICHOLLS. Mary's birthplace was then recorded as Paul which is probably more accurate given the place of marriage was also at Paul. Children were Mary E age 9, Richard age 6, John age 4 and Grace L age 2. Grace L is no doubt Louisa from the later Census and all children are recorded as born Penzance. I do not have access to Penzance baptisms so am unable to help with birth/baptism dates for any of these children at the moment. Here is the marriage from the Paul records:- 30 May 1871 by Banns Richard Nicholas full age Fisherman of Mousehole (Father: John Nicholas, Carpenter) Mary Nankervis full age of Mousehole (Father: William Henry Nankervis, Mariner) Witnesses: John P. Blewett, Ane Sampson Rowe I will attempt to find some information on James but will otherwise need to come back to this problem tomorrow. CT

James Tan Nicholas was a couple of years older than Richard although they were baptised on the same day.
In 1851 James was age 4 and his birth appears in FreeBMD as James TEARE Nicholas born December Qtr 1846 Vol 9 Page 224.
Their father, John Nicholas, was born at Sennen about 1805 and is possibly:-
John s/o John and Anne Nicholas bp. 2nd July 1805 Sennen (John Nicholas married Anne Ash 5th November 1798 at Sennen)
The eldest child living at home in 1851 was Elizabeth who was born at Paul about 1833. (bp. 26th October 1834 at Paul)
I can fill in more gaps a little later but the parents of your Richard Nicholas are were married at Paul:-
8 Oct 1826 by Banns John Nicholas of St. Levan Jane Ash [Mark] Witnesses: Richard Ash, Richard Pentreath
James cannot be found in the 1861 Census and he is certainly not with his parents. I suspect he might be the following buried at Paul:-
James T Nicholas of Mousehole age 6 buried 21st November 1851
There was a Jane Ash age 91, widow, living with this family in 1861 and I believe this will be John Nicholas' mother-in-law.
Will leave it at that for now but I think I have managed to answer some of your questions.

Hi CT et al, Well, another Nicholas descendant has contacted me - like my father-in-law, he is a great grandson of Richard Nicholas... It turns out that he was estranged from the Nicholas side of the family but wants to know more...how exciting! Thanks to this forum's help I have provided information that he did not have! Good work people, and thanks once again! alocin66
