Thomas Woolcock
marries
Margaret USTICK
5 Nov 1689 at St Just in Penwith...
Margaret was given as a WIDOW.... I only noticed that slight but fundamental detail after merrily adding away to my tree.... drat.
Does anyone have an idea of whom Margaret Ustick was the widow?
I have had no luck!!!
Thanks in advance, M

Hello there May be a little early for your Margaret but there was a marriage 26 September 1653 at St Just between John Usticke son of John and Margaret Shearme daughter of Robert. Best regards Heather C

Thanks in advance, M Malcolm I too have wrestled with this problem for many years. Not able to find a suitable Ustick marriage. Going on the births of her 3 children with Thomas (1690-96) I have estimated her to have been born about 1655 at the earliest. After the death of Thomas she went on for the triple, and married Christopher Penberthy, 4th.frb.1698/9 at St.Just. I presume you have seen Thomas's Inventory. One of the signatories was Stephen Ustick. Allso have tried the avenue of looking for a suitable burial for a Ustick, without any success. Roy

Hi Heather, I had pondered that one myself as a matter of fact. The problem is that there is no corroborating evidence I can find... I was hoping I might be able to find a will or a burial- or both... 13-Feb 1642 Erth, St. John USTICE Seems far too early 11-Jan 1642 Erth, St. William USTICE More info Seems far too early 22-May 1665 Buryan, St. Charles USTICK Possible but no further information
?-? 1685 Buryan, St. Charles USTICKE child of Oliver- so not possible
23-Apr 1690 Just in Penwith, St. Thomas USTICK too late by a year or so
As for possible widows we have the following- accepting that Margaret/Mary/Margery may have been mixed up... a long shot...
26-Sep 1653 Just in Penwith, St. John USTICKE Margaret SHEARME 05-Dec 1656 Just in Penwith, St. thomas USTICKE Mary TRENBERTH 25-Feb 1681 Buryan, St. Richard (Mr) USTICKE Marye NOALLS
Now, the most likely character seems to be Margaret Shearme, although, as you say, it is a bit early.
Of course, we are going off the information that is available, not that which ISN'T available!
The name Shearme is interesting in itself because it seems to come from the East, I think Margaret Shearme d/o Robert is the first to be found recorded on OPC in West Penwith. The Shearmes/Shermes seem to hail from Kilkhampton, Morwenstow and Launceston way- although some Shermes, daughters of Robert turn up in the 1690's at Stratton. It seems like we have the before and the after but not the info we need, slap bang in the middle of the Civil War period is tricky when you hit a brickwall. I do wonder, however, if Robert Shearme father of Margaret Ustick (perhaps widow) was not the son of 04-Jul 1575 Kilkhampton Robertus Sherme Margeria Bailie
Hmmmm ?
