Hello again, I have put this query here, because it is might help some people with surname interests. After Jmg pointed out a flaw in one of my more obscure lines, I had skipped a generation of Thomas Osbornes by accident...duh, I managed to "reconstruct" some more connections. I say reconstruct as we are dealing with the mid- to late 1600's and we all know how much can be just educated guesswork and balancing probabilities, locations etc. Anyway, I have come across one "confirmed" IGI entry for JOHANA GWYNOPE married to Thomas Osborne, 1623. I can find no baptism and no Philimore entry for this. It is rather early too! 1. Would I be correct in assuming that GWYNOPE is a form of the surname GWENNAP, deriving from Gwennap I presume! 2. I have found the following information from IGI There are 12 "Gwennaps" born in the period, the following are the earliest and all seem to be born to Richard recorded in Latin Richardi- but no Johana!!!!!!!! 1. THOMAS GWINOPE 1616 2. RICHARDUS GWYNOPE 1610 3. JOHES. GWYNOPE 1602 4. ROBERTUS GWINOPE 1613 5. WILLIMUS. GWYNOPE 1603 6. NICHOLAUS GWYNOPE 1607 The later ones all seem to be born to FRANCISCI GWYNOPE or GWYNNIPPE It doesn't help the fact that the surname is spelt so many different ways. Any information on these characters? Johana? Could she be the sister of Johannes, John and Jane perhaps? NB At St Buryan, I find GWENNEPP in the 1670's GUINAP at St Just in the 1660's and GWENNAP in the 1650's at Madron. Thanks in advance.

Phillimore entries for Gulval start at 1686 which is why you could not find the marriage there.
Another one I can throw into the mix for you is:-
Matthew GWENOP of Penzance married Mary MICHELL 6th November 1686 at Zennor
Don't know who he belongs to but then I have never got down to trying too hard what with all the other things I have been looking for.
According to Pawley-White in his 'Handbook of Cornish Surnames' this name is, as you suggest, derived from the Parish of the same name.

Is there anywhere that has early Gulval records online, other than IGI that is?
Strangely, I don't find many of these at Gwennap!!!!

The Millett & Bolitho Transcription of Gulval Parish Registers was available for purchase at least up until a couple of months ago.
I have not checked lately on availability but it is worth a try.
Other than that I think only a subscription to FindMyPast might be the only possibility of online availability.

Malcolm - the book of Gulval PRs (1598-1812) is certainly available online.
It appears to be available in either Book or CD form but not, unfortunately, PDF.
Prices seem to start at around $25.00USD.

Thanks, I will put them on my list! Otherwise it might be back to Ancestry.com. How do you find Findmypast.com, any better or worse than others in your opinion?

Ancestry and FMP have a lot of different stuff to each other and I have not used FMP very much. But best you ask Newlyn about FMP. At least Ancestry has all the Census records (except 1911) with access to original images.

I have never subscribed to Ancestry and on the whole I am pleased enough with FMP.
A couple of downers for FMP are that they do not have the complete 1851 census available yet. Also even though you have paid them a generous yearly subscription they do keep an eye on how many credits you are using and will let you know if you use to many.
There are plenty of Cornish records on there. It looks like they will be adding the 1911 census to there records in the near future.
