Here is an interesting little problem for you all to ponder.
St Ives Marriages
28 Dec 1863 by Licence
Henry Cox 23 bachelor Shipwright of St. Ives (Father: Richard Cox, Coast Guard)
Jane Christopher Quick 23 spinster of St. Ives (Father: Christopher Quick, Mariner)
Witnesses: Wilmot Bryant, Wm. [?]
Just who was this girl?
And who was her father?
The earliest Christopher QUICK I have recorded is Christopher George Quick s/o James and Annie bp. at Gwennap in 1832 so he cannot possibly be the father!
So - some facts.
Jane was age 23 at the time of marriage and so was born about 1840 and would therefore appear in the Civil Registration Index - unless the entry was missed or she was not registered.
A search of FreeBMD for all events involving Jane Christopher QUICK returns only one entry from 1837 to past 1900 and that is the 1863 marriage.
In 1871 Henry and Jane COX were at Portsea, Hampshire where Jane's age is recorded as 29 and her birthplace as St Ives so we are still looking at about 1840 or 1841 for her birth.
There appears to be no Jane QUICK in the Census records to be a close match.
STUCK!
But a little thinking and searching has provided some interesting possibilities.
I tried a search in FreeBMD for ANY event where the christian names were 'Jane Christopher' - i.e. no surname entered.
And there is only ONE entry appears in the Births for any District in Cornwall:-
Penzance R.D.1840 March Qtr Vol 9 Page 210
Jane Christopher ROUSE
Here we have the correct christian names and a birthdate that is almost the perfact match - but the surname is wrong!
But there is enough here to warrant further investigation.
The baptism does not appear in the St Ives records to 1840 and it does not appear in the Primitive Methodist records so either occurred after 1840 in the established Church or at one of the other Chapels.
So Census records must be next on the agenda - and this is where I have found something even more interesting and intriguing.
More to follow ......
Here now are the entries from the Census:-

Has anyone noticed yet that this is a little confusing!
I have not yet been able to find this family in 1881 so will need to check on possible deaths.
But - here are a couple of interesting observations:-
James ROUSE
In 1851 James is recorded as 'unmarried'
In 1861 James is recorded as 'married'
In 1871 James is recorded as 'unmarried'
Jane QUICK
In 1841 she is Jane QUICK, female servant
In 1851 she is Jane ROUSE, sister-in-law, widow
In 1861 she is Jane QUICK, servant, unmarried
In 1871 she is Jane ROUSE, boarder, widow
Jane Christopher QUICK (?)
In 1841 she is Jane QUICK
In 1851 she is Jane C ROUSE, niece
In 1861 she is Jane CHRISTOPHER, daughter
In 1863 she marries Henry COX as Jane Christopher QUICK
Are you all sure you are not confused yet?? ;D
Deaths Mar 1877 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ROUSE James 76 Penzance 5c 218
This is certainly the death of the James ROUSE under discussion here.
He was baptised at St Ives 19th August 1801 son of James and Judith (nee STEVENS)
Deaths Sep 1905 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quick Jane 87 Penzance 5c 133
This 'may' be our Jane QUICK/ROUSE but I need to check a few more Census records.
There is certainly no record of a Jane ROUSE who could possibly be her and this is the only entry as Jane QUICK that appears to be close to a possibility.
