Hello everyone,
Sorry I have been so scarce of late, hectic time at work at the moment.
Anyway, I have just got the first batch of results back for the Y-DNA analysis I did, with of course my male ancestor being William Davies of Paul, c1799.
What's interesting is that the 12 markers seem to correspond to a haplogroup R1b that is the general Celtic type. I am still waiting for the full 37 results to come through. On the website I have found a lot of 12 matches throughout Britain and Ireland but also in the Azores, Portugal, Spain, and going up through to Holland and then an arc down through Southern Germany, Switzerland and Austria into the Czech Republic. All this seems to suggest the Iron-Age La Tene Celts. Although we ought to be careful with assumptions. The highest match area so far is in Switzerland!!!!
I have also found that a few Welsh Davies have a marker distance of -1 and some other Davis/Davies in "England" have a marker distance of -1 too. This might suggest that William did indeed come from an older Davies line. There are also -1 correspondences with other Welsh families but with different names and a couple of Cornish ones. In England the matches are concentrated in the south of England and then go up the middle to Scotland!!! Interestingly enough I found one match in Italy, but when I contacted the person I found that their ancestor in the 1800 was an "unknown English sailor"... err.. being from a Cornish family I wonder! LOL!!!! :=)
Anyway, if anyone else has done one these tests and would like to compare and contrast, and/or offer any advice please let me know. I am still not sure about what all the results mean yet... hard stuff!
All the best,
Malcolm
