I am looking for information on the Job family who emigrated from St Ives to Cape Town in about 1880. Thomas Henry Job returned to Cornwall in 1912 and re married. He ran a pub in or around St Ives until he died in 1915.

Welcome to the site Allan. Can you tell me a little more about Thomas Henry JOB? Things like his age, name of first wife and any other detail you may have would be handy. JOB was not a St Ives name and in 1881 there were only three of that name at St Ives. Ishmael JOB and his wife Jane were with their son-in-law Jacob HODGE who appears to have married Ishmael's daughter Harriet. Ishmael was born at Mawnan according to this Census although daughter Jane was born at St Ives. The only other was Elizabeth J JOB who was born at Penzance about 1870. She was the grandaughter of Alice DAVIES who also had daughter Lavinia CURNOW living with her. I will be happy to find out a little more about the family for you if you can supply that little extra to work with. CT

In 1871 Ishmael and Jane are living at St Ives and have daughter Harriet (future Mrs HODGE) with them.
This time both Ishmael and Jane state their birthplace as Manaccan which is just across the water from Mawnan.
Harriet is recorded again as having been born at St Ives.
Ishmael was a retired Naval Coastguard boatman.
AHA - I think I have found your Thomas Henry in 1861.
1861 Census St Ives
Beach
Ishmael JOB, head, mar, 50, Coast Guard Officer (birthplace not given) Jane do., wife, mar, 52, (birthplace unreadable) Elizabeth do., daur, 18, Falmouth William G do., son, 16, Falmouth THOMAS H do., son, 11, St Ives Harriet do., daur, 9, St Ives
From St Ives Marriages:-
2 Apr 1867 by Licence Edward Richards 25 bachelor Master mariner of St. Ives (Father: John Richards, Master mariner) Elizabeth Jane Job 20 spinster of St. Ives (Father: Ishmael Job, Coast Guard) Witnesses: Ishmael Job, Catherine Ann Wearne
FreeBMD has marriages for two men named Thomas Henry JOB:-
Thomas Henry JOB married Mary Gordon SISLEY in the Penzance R.D. in the September Qtr of 1867 and they appear at St Ives in 1871 where Thomas is recorded as a 'joiner'.
The second marriage occurs at Plymouth in 1878 to either Melina KING or Bessie RUNDLE but I have no way at the moment of knowing which.
And also no means of finding whether this is the same Thomas given he does not seem to appear in the Census for 1881.
However - back in 1851 Ishmael and Jane are again at St Ives with their family and again the birthplace is unclear.
It 'looks' like Dargan but I know of no place of that name in Cornwall.
The only Ishmael JOB recorded in IGI was baptised at Wendron 18th July 1813 as the illegitimate son of Mary JOB.

Many thanks for the quick response. Thomas Henry Job is the son of Ishmael. As you say he married Mary Gordon Sisley in 1867. The reason they are not on the 1881 census is that they had emigrated to Cape Town in 1879/80. Leaving one daughter Elizabeth with her grandmother Alice Davis.
My main interests are really based around the members of the Job family that did not go (eg. Elizabeth, brothers/sisters etc) also on what happened to Thomas Henry after he returned to Cornwall, I know he married a Grace Trembath in about 1912 and died in 1915 but don`t know where he died or where he is buried.
By the way I think Ishmael was born in DURGAN.

Allan - I have to tell you that you need to make a slight adjustment to your database.
Elizabeth Jane was actually the daughter of William George JOB the brother of Thomas Henry.
William married Mary Ann DAVIES in 1869.
I will take another look for further information later on but so far have not been able to find the marriage of Ishmael and Jane.

CT As you suggested I have re-checked the information I have on Elizabeth Jane Job (1871). I now have her birth certificate which confirms that Thomas Henry Job was her father. They lived in the Warren at the time. I do not know why she stayed with her Grandmother and did not emigrate to South Africa in 1879/80 with the rest of her family. Regards Allan

Allan - that is most interesting given the information I found suggested Elizabeth Jane was certainly the daughter of William.
It is always possible that each named a daughter Elizabeth Jane so I may have to look back on that.
I will try and investigate that further a little later tonight if I can get the chance.

Allan - decided to have a quick look immediately and here is what I have found:- St Ives Baptisms 187019 Oct Elizabeth Jane c/o William George (Custom House officer) & Mary Ann Job of Penzance b. 3 Aug 187214 Feb Elizabeth Jane c/o Thomas Henry (Carpenter) & Mary Gordon Job of St. Ives b. 3 Oct 1871 So - they each certainly named a daughter as Elizabeth Jane!! Hence the confusion. I am sorry you had to spend money on a Birth Certificate but I had completely forgotten I had copies of the records for the period in question. Other things to do now but I will see if I can find anything further for you later on. CT
