This is one of those situations that serves to remind me what was happening to Danny Crane on Boston Legal - the onset of dementia. I have received a death entry for Thomas Quick in NZ and I cannot remember why I wanted to see it, seriously.
So I believe it may be the man who appears in the 1841 census as one of the children of Jane, at Vogue in Gwennap, and therefore the son of Ambrose and Jane, but not sure at this stage. He may have been born in Ireland as it happens.
The date of death appears to be December 1896 at Westport, New Zealand, Thomas Quick, miner, aged 75, parents unknown. I cannot decipher the name of his wife at this stage but her first name was Mary and her surname is something like Hammond. The marriage appears to have been in Bendigo, Victoria around the 1855 to 1860 era. At the time of his death there appears to be seven children still living ranging from 36 years old to 24 years old.
I am guessing that if the marriage in Australia could be found there may be a chance of determining who he is.
Appreciate some help from those that have access to the appropriate records.

Right now things are not looking very promising as far as Victoria is concerned.
In the Pioneer Index (1836-1888) there are three marriages for a Thomas QUICK but they are 1872, 1874 and 1876.
There are only four children born to Thomas and Mary QUICK in the same time period.
Three of those are to Thomas Ustick QUICK in the 1870's and the other to Thomas and Mary (nee Lipscombe) in 1890.
South Australia is equally unhelpful.
If you can provide any further information at all it will be useful.

I would say that Thomas arrived in NZ around 1866, some 8 to 10 years after his marriage. A son born 1860, a daughter born 1862 and another daughter born 1864 are most likely to have been born in Australia. The younger ones probably born in NZ.
Informant was the undertaker so that is of little value.
Parents were unknown but believed to be farmers.
Thomas believed to have been born in what looks like Ireland.

I have searched high and low and cannot find anything about this Thomas. (see email for most of my efforts) Based on your latest I just searched the Victorian Pioneers Index for any children born with Thomas as the father. The earliest is Thomas Ustick Quick son of Thomas Ustick and Mary (nee Young) at Creswick in 1875. If Thomas was indeed born in Ireland then he possibly becomes no problem but he has nonetheless become a pain in the proverbial in a very short space of time! As per email I cannot find any record of Thomas leaving Victoria. I have also taken a look at the New Zealand BDM Indexes and the earliest Quicks shown as being born there begin in 1875 with the parents being Thomas and Martha. Don't know if that might be any help but it seems to be the best I can do. CT

CT This is not the first time that I have come across a dead end around this time and in Victoria. I well remember trying to find the marriage of John Glasson and Emily Birchall knowing that their son Stephen Glasson was born in Bridgwater, Victoria in 1856. From a final look at the death entry I cannot see any other surname for Mary other than Hammond. I have looked at shipping between NZ and OZ around 1866 but cannot see them. Saying that my knowledge in that area is pretty limited. They may have gone to Nelson, Wellington or Lyttelton prior to moving onto Westport - or they may have gone straight there. We know that being born in Ireland does not mean that they are not related to West Penwith family so I would not like to let this family go just yet. I think that I will go looking for the birth entry of the 24 year old female and until I have it in my hand I will leave this subject alone. If there is any one out there who has a specialty looking at shipping I would ask them if they would keep a look out for Thomas, born around 1821, to Australia around the 1852 era and also Thomas, Mary and probably three children from Australia to NZ around the 1866 era. Lannanta - I agree that you should not let this one fall away. I should think it is too firmly planted in your brain now to let go anyway but it is one of those problems that, once started, it is really good to see solved. Talking of solving problems - if I can locate the relevant thread standby to be more confused with some work I have been doing surrounding the Catherine Thomas EADEY marriage to John QUICK. I am confused and slowly unravelling ..... (unravelling the mystery that is! ) But I think the IGI people might be a bit confused also ... unless I find something really different soon that will send me round the twist again! CT

Hi,
Not much success at the Library.
The Grey River Argus (Greymouth) 1866 - 1872 papers (no 1868) that have been extracted for shipping arrivals etc make no mention of Thomas Quick. However a Thomas Quick was mulcted 10/- for being drunk and disorderly on the Greymouth streets, 20/6/1872.
One of the problems in recording is that those in steerage were deemed not worth the paper and ink - a mere total was given for any one ship and the sum for steerage passengers during that time must be close to 1000. Also there are no data available to me for the many ships that went into Hokitika, many directly from Melbourne or Sydney.
Looking through the 1883, & 1887 PO Directories the following Quicks are noted. Age and origin not given - would have to check other sources, probably in the towns mentioned.
Christopher George Auckland Edmund E. C. commision Agent (a broker), Dunedin Edwin tarpaulin maker, Masterton Francis coach proprietor, Auckland Francis James farmer, Auckland Frank livery stables Auckland Henry Chester Street, Christchurch Henry bailiff, Hamilton Thomas striker, Christchurch William Henry commission agent, Dunedin William Henry barrister & solicitor, Wellington William Hitchins Wellington
Also
A Mr Quick was on the "Ladybird" in Dunedin 31/12/1865
A Captain Henry Quick appeared in shipping notices of the 1850's. He captained a local trading boat "Bon Accord" mainly out of Auckland.
Cheers

Hello NZJohn1
Looks like a lot or work for you. I have made contact with a lady who may have some relation to a Thomas Quick in Christchurch and I will be swapping notes with her when I come back next week.
I also saw the entry in the Argus and was disppointed to see little other detail to go with it. It seems to be that this couple may have shied away from registering their children and even their marriage. There seems to be a complete lack of data about them including once they reached NZ. Very strange.

G'day NZJohn1 - thankyou from me also for your hard work. I have only just opened this post but I have two possibilities for the first on your list - Christopher George QUICK. There was a Christopher George QUICK birth registered Liskeard R.D., Cornwall in 1854. But there was also Christopher George QUICK born 1861 Sandhurst, Victoria son of James and Ellen (nee WHITFORD) QUICK. Interestingly there was also a Christopher George QUICK married Rebecca FUNSTON in Victoria in 1862. Even more interesting is that there are three children born to this couple - in 1858, 1859 and 1861!! One of these was 'Fran' - possibly Francis. I can find no further record of a Christopher QUICK in Victoria right through to the 1980's. CT

Hi Iannanta, Just going thru some old posts as my interest has been regenerated!!. I would like to correct some info I gave you some time ago.....You may not be interested, but thought i would just clear this up.
RE: Decendant from Thomas and Zenobie Quick.
Thomas Quick b. 1851 Hayle, Phillack, Cornwall - came to NZ 1874 married to Martha Caddy and died in NZ 1936. I told you they had no children to his first wife Martha, which I have since found is incorrect. It appears Thomas was a prolific breeder...... of females!! 13 in all...
He marrired Martha Caddy b. 1853/4 Cornwall died 11.10.88.
According to NZ BMD their children
1875 Elizabeth Anna 1878 Emily married 1904 to James William Horne 1879 Catherine 1882 Elizabeth Annie 1885 Mabel m 1907 to George Richard Flintoff - Mabel died age 70
Dates may not be accurate as have been taken off the BMD site. I wonder if the first Elizabeth died with another EA later on??
He then married Rose Emily Lane and had
1890 Eleanor 1892 Rosina died age 1 year 1893 1893 Joy Eveline 1895 Maud Evan m John James Christian 1900 Florence Myrtle Quick m. Charles Potter 1901? Edna Pearl m. 1920 Joseph Herbert Owen Forbes. d. 1976 1904 Iris Olive Ethel m. Norman Chester d. 1990 1906 Emma Amelia m Eric Owen Evans

Christopher George Quick was the son of James Quick and Annie Hooper who married at Plymouth St Andrew, Devon, 23rd March 1817 with Ambrose Quick as one of the witnesses. James Quick was baptised at Kenwyn 9th January 1791 son of Francis Quick and Frances Williams who married at Kenwyn in 1789. Francis was baptised at Gwennap in 1765 and his line goes back to the marriage of Gabriel Quick and Mary Phillips at Gwennap in 1674 with Gabriel being son of James and Jane (nee Knight) from Zennor. James Quick and Annie Hooper - Annie Hooper was baptised at Calstock 22nd January 1797 to John Hooper and Dorothy (nee Nettle). There were two children to James and Annie baptised at Calstock (John Nettle 1818 and William 1820) before the family moved back to Gwennap where a further four sons were born. Those sons where Richard Henry baptised 29th February 1824, James born at St Day in 1829, Christopher George baptised privately at Gwennap 7th February 1832 and Francis born at Gwennap c.1834. All four of these sons were later baptised at Calstock 9th August 1838 and then there was one last son baptised at Calstock also on 9th August 1838 but buried 8 months later on 19th March 1839. The first three sons appear to have married and remained in Cornwall around Calstock and Callington and I have nothing further so far on Francis. But James and Christopher George both spent time in Victoria. James married Ellen Whitford at Calstock 14th December 1850 and died at Sandhurst, Victoria, in 1888. I have 12 children for James and Ellen from 1858 to 1875 with ten of those, including Christopher George Quick (1861) born in Victoria. The first two children I am not really sure about as the source for them was the VicGold Project many years ago. That information shows son Enoch born 1858 and son Francis born 1859 and died Victoria 1858 age 17. But I have just found another child in the South Australia Birth Index that might throw a little doubt on this:- Emily Ophelia daughter of James Quick and Ellen (Whitford) born 18th December 1859 Hamilton (near Kapunda). This will all be part of my review ....... once I can get to it! CT

Sally - you have me completely confused here! I have no marriage and no children for James (1714) son of James and Margaret. James Quick (no bp. found - son of Gabriel and Mary) married Margaret Bryant at Gwennap in 1707. They had four children - Mary, Gabriel, Jane and James. Margaret was buried the same day James was baptised on 2nd March 1714/5. (Originally written as 2nd but something has been written over the date that some have interpreted as 1st.) After the death of Margaret James then married Ann Bray on 2nd July 1719. Another nine children followed including Francis baptised in 1725 but as far as I know he died unmarried and was buried at Gwennap 5th March 1795. CT

Sorry Ian, Didn't mean to confuse you! You stated the following: What I should have said was how does Francis connect back to Gabriel and Mary?
