Hi guys, I'm stuck again! ;D But not with a William as CT will be pleased to hear!!! I have an ancestor John Hodge of Plymouth/Stoke Damerel (just over the water) marrying Elizabeth Cornish in 1852 in Plymouth. According to the marriage cert Elizabeth would have been born 1830/1831 in Plymouth- her father is given as Alexander Cornish- horsedriver( ) . On the census I have had no luck until I found an Alexander Cornish married to Elizabeth Pope 1834, Boyton (a Cornish enclave surrounded by Devon on nearly all sides) and an Elizabeth baptised in 1835 at Hathersleigh in Devon. Later census details give an an Alexander "waggon driver" and Elizabeth (wife) of Hathersleigh in Devon- so I just may be on the right track. Alexander seems to have been born in 1814 in Egloskerry to Eleazer(?) Cornish and Mary. There it stops again. The problem is, it does make him rather young.... if this is indeed the right line, could it explain an 1830/31 birth when Alexander was 17 and a marriage in 1834 when he would have been full age 21? A "shotgun" wedding perhaps.... I don't know if I am on the right lines here but it seems the only possible link. Given that Plymouth always had a high influx of people from Devon and Cornwall it is feasible that some may have drifted towards the city. Does anyone have any information on these characters or families? I know it is not West Penwith as such, but may still be covered by Phillimores etc. Thanks in advance, Malcolm

Malcolm - I think you are probably on the right line here. BUT - I think young Elizabeth might be guilty of telling a little porky pie! ;D In 1841 and 1851 I can find only three men named Alexander Cornish - anywhere. The one you have identified would seem to be the right one but Elizabeth was not baptised late - she was age 6 in 1841 and then appears to have been working as a servant in 1851 and gave her age as 17 - all consistent with a birth probably not long after the marriage of Alexander and Elizabeth. I have been so far unable to find her and John HODGE in 1861 to help confirm this. If you can give me a few more details about the HODGE family it may help. (e.g. kids and birthdates). Will send you a little something via email. CT

I have sent Malcolm some information via email and will allow him to update the post once he has had a good look though it. But there is one thing I neglected to consider in my earlier post - the fact that Alexander CORNISH may have beendead prior to the 1841 Census! In this case we may well have the wrong Elizabeth identified. In the 1861 and later Census records her age is consistent with a birth of around 1828 or 1829 and that would certainly discount the aforementioned links. Here is a link for the OPC site for Devon which may or may not be of use. (A quick look at it shows that much information will be on a 'look up' basis.) genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/OPCproject.htmlCT

I have replied to your emails and am scratching my head a bit on this one!

Still scratching my head on this one... I can only find 3 Alexander Cornishes here, and it HAS to be one of them. But there seem to be more arguments against than for!!! Oh dear!
