Time to resurrect another old thread!
Sarch - You seem to have things a little mixed up here
because Mary Wallis would have been the
second wife of John Stevens Hollow. John and Mary had at least five children from about 1879 through 1890 and there may have been another one or two between 1876 and 1879.
The situation with Charlotte Sandow Quick is very confusing to say the least.
In July 1853 Charlotte arrived in Melbourne along with her parents and siblings aboard the 'Euphemus'. She was recorded as age 11 but in fact would have been 12 when she arrived.
In 1856 there is a record of a marriage between Nicholas PIERCE and Charlotte QUICK which is where the confusion begins. Charlotte Sandow Quick would have been just 15 at the time of this marriage so could this be another Charlotte Quick?
The one thing that seems to provide a link is that when she died in 1873 Charlotte was registered as Charlotte Sandow Pearce daughter of Nathaniel and Susanna Quick.
Adding to the confusion is the marriage in Victoria in 1870 between John Stevens Hollow and Charlotte Sandow Quick with both recorded as born St Ives.
This is undoubtedly the daughter of Nathaniel and Susanna and it certainly raises doubts about the 1856 marriage.
I tried searching for some information using Google and found a reference to Charlotte
Hollow being a patient at the Creswick Hospital on 6th December 1872. And then Charlotte Sandow
Pearce died at Creswick 6th February 1873 age 31.
I though perhaps if I could find out something about Nicholas Pierce it might help but I am still a little confused!
I have found something that appears potentially useful but there must still be doubt over all of this.
If we assume that Charlotte Sandow Quick married twice and that she was a widow at the time of the second marriage then the first thing we require is, hopefully, some record of the demise of Nicholas Pierce/Peirce/Pearce. There are a number of Nicholas Pearce (sic.) deaths registered in Victoria and it appears only one of those could possibly be the one we want.
Nicholas Pearce age 26, born Cornwall, died Victoria 1863
Father - Nicholas Pearce
Mother - Mary Anne (unknown)
A check of the 1851 Census provides us with a family of Nicholas and Mary Ann Pearce at Wendron with eldest son Nicholas age 19. This would seem to be our man.
Nicholas Pearce married Mary Ann Treloar at Wendron 5th May 1836
Nicholas son of Nicholas and Mary Ann Pearce of Halwin baptised 27th August 1837 at Wendron
Uh-Oh! - that Nicholas was still at home in Wendron with his mother in 1861 so he could not have married Charlotte!
He may have arrived in Victoria after the 1861 Census but he certainly could not have married Charlotte.
So if the information in the death record is correct I can find just one other possible marriage:-
Nicholas Pearce, common seaman, married Mary Ann Roberts at Falmouth 26th May 1836
I can find no more on this couple and FreeBMD shows just two Nicholas Pearce births in Cornwall from 1837-1841. The second looks to be a son of Henry and Amelia at Breage. It does appear though that there may be some missing from the records as there is Nicholas Pearce born at Kenwyn about 1838 son of Thomas and Mary.
This last Nicholas looks like the Nicholas Pearce who died in Victoria in 1873 age 35. His parents are recorded as Thomas and Mary and his birthplace as Cornwall.
Hmm - Looks like this Nicholas married Jane Frances Floyd in 1868.
Is it possible we may be looking at a Divorce here??
Looks like I am going to have to do some more thinking on this one ....... unless someone else has the answers!
