Do you have this Nancy in your database?
Is this someone like Ann, the daughter of Robert Quick and Elizabeth Stevens perhaps?

G'day Lannanta - no, I did not have that death recorded. However, on looking through my database there is only one possibility and that is the one you have mentioned - i.e. bp. 8th December 1811 at St Ives d/o Robert and Elizabeth. (Mother was recorded as Mary.) Right age, father was a carpenter, no other candidate - job done!

OK
So here is another puzzle.
William Gregory had a daughter named Mary Major Gregory who married Thomas Richards Quick in 1852 in St Ives. Thomas and Mary had two children, Thomas and William before the 1861 census. Mary Major is at home with her parents William and Mary (although I believe that she is wrongly named as a GREGORY instead of QUICK, but she is listed as married).
Mary Major has a sister living at home in the 1861 census - Catherine Stevens GREGORY. Now it so happens that a certain Catherine Stevens GREGORY married a John QUICK in the December quarter of 1863, but this John QUICK had died by the 1871 census. I do not know who this John is, but given the closeness of this family it could have been Thomas's brother - John Richards QUICK.
I am interested to know if you have considered any of the above?

Well my trans-Tasman friend first things being first:- John Richards QUICK bp. 22nd November 1839 St Ives s/o Benedict and Kitthy (nee RICHARDS) died at Maryborough, Victoria, in 1911 at the age of 72. (Reg. 2100) Apart from FreeBMD I am unable to find the marriage anywhere at the moment so it is extremely difficult to determine just who this fella was. Process of elimination might work but that would be a long and tedious process. It is a fair chance that he was living at St Ives in 1861 and likely even that he was born there. And it appears they had a daughter born about 1864 or 1865 at St Ives. So a display of John Quicks living at St Ives in 1861 produces the following possibilities:- s/o John and Elizabeth bp. 28th April 1839 Towednack (not in database) s/o Richard and Grace Bennets born c. 1843 St Ives (but he was John Bennetts Quick) All the rest I have taken care of and out of the two above I would opt for the first given the absence of a second initial in the FreeBMD Index. It is also possible that he was not living at St Ives in 1861 or even that he was 'at sea' at the time. Can't help any more than that at the moment. CT

Ah well there you go, I thought it might have been a simple fix as I was going through putting the 1871 Quicks into my spreadsheet.
As a matter of interest John, the son of John and Elizabeth you mention, appears in the 1871 census at Penbeagle still living with his parents so it is not him either.
I will come back to him and a few others once I have put the last few in.
PS. What got me onto Catherine in the first place was a certain Christian Quick, a 34 year old widow, living at Salubrious Place (love that name) in St Ives, recorded as a sister, at the household of Ephraim P. STEVENS. So I assumed she was a Stevens, but could not find her marriage to a Quick. I think that I am missing something in all this.

Actually looking at the censuses in general, given where John Richards Quick died, the most likely candidate would be John, the son of Nathaniel and Susanna - as you did not have him as one of your two, did you discount him for another reason?

I will start with the widowed Christian QUICK. You will find the following St Ives marriages involved in this one:- 12 Feb 1859 by Banns Ephraim Perkin Stevens of full age bachelor Mariner of St. Ives (Father: Job Stevens, Fisherman) Martha Hendy of full age spinster of St. Ives (Father: Samuel Hendy, Mason) Witnesses: Samuel Hendy, [?] Hendy 18 Jan 1862 by Banns John Quick 25 bachelor Mariner of St. Ives (Father: Paul Quick, Hair dresser) Christian Hendy 25 spinster of St. Ives (Father: Samuel Hendy, Mason) Witnesses: Samuel Hendy, Martha Stevens, [?] Daniell Christian and Martha HENDY were daughters of Samuel HENDY m. Martha BECKERLEG 8th February 1830 at St Ives. And Christian's husband was the son of Paul QUICK m. Mary Ann NINNES. Now for John s/o Nathaniel and Susanna QUICK. I think the reason I may have discounted him is because his family moved to Victoria, Australia. But on checking my database I notice that I have three children of Nathaniel and Susanna as yet unaccounted for - Jane Williams, Robert and JOHN. Nathaniel and Susanna and the other five children all died in Victoria. Natural assumption is that the whole family went to Australia but that certainly needs a re-think. The youngest son, Richard, married in Victoria in 1871. Charlotte Sandow Q was supposed to have been married to a PEARCE but there is a marriage for her in Victoria in 1870 to a John Stevens HOLLOW. (She may have been widowed then remarried but I have not checked.) Working backwards we next have John and then Robert as unknowns. William Edward married Mary Sandow WASLEY at St Ives in 1857. Susan married James QUICK s/o James and Elizabeth (nee MAJOR) at St Ives in 1850. Nathaniel Williams Q m. Sarah LUKE at St Ives in 1853. The eldest daughter was Jane Williams Q. I will break away from my US research for a bit and do some checking on this for you but it certainly looks like he might be a candidate. Back with more shortly. CT

A few bits! Jane Williams QUICK died Penzance R.D. in 1847 so that takes care of her and leaves Robert and John. There is a Robert QUICK died 1863 Penzance R.D. that I have not accounted for so this 'could' be him. At the moment I cannot, for some reason, find the family coming in to Australia so will have to keep working on that. No sign of Robert or John in Victoria or South Australia Deaths. Here we go:- This is an index to VPRS 14 Register of Assisted British Immigrants 1839-1871 9 results found. Family Name Given Name Age Month Year Ship Book Page QUICK CHARLOTTE 11 JUL 1853 EUPHEMUS 10 116 QUICK JOHN 13 JUL 1853 EUPHEMUS 10 116 QUICK NATHANIEL 44 JUL 1853 EUPHEMUS 10 116 QUICK NATHANIEL 22 JUL 1853 EUPHEMUS 10 116 QUICK RICHARD 9 JUL 1853 EUPHEMUS 10 116 QUICK ROBERT 14 JUL 1853 EUPHEMUS 10 118 QUICK SARAH 20 JUL 1853 EUPHEMUS 10 116 QUICK SUSANNAH 44 JUL 1853 EUPHEMUS 10 116 QUICK WILLIAM 17 JUL 1853 EUPHEMUS 10 118 This is the entire family except for daughter Susan and her husband James QUICK. Sarah is the wife of Nathaniel jnr. So we know that John and Robert came to Australia with the family in 1853. And it is obvious from the above that at least William must have returne to Cornwall because he was married at St Ives in 1857. He and his wife did, however, return to Victoria where William died in 1863. Question is - did Robert and John also return to Cornwall?? Or did they perhaps end up in NSW, New Zealand or the US. (Or somewhere else!) William and Mary must have returned to Victoria almost immediately after being married as their first child was born here in 1858. (If so then I cannot find them coming back into Victoria!) Looks like William returned to England in 1856. He is listed as W Quick age 21 bound for Liverpool on the "Red Jacket" in September 1856. Family name Given name / title Age Ship name Departure month Departure year Destination Film Ref month Film Ref year Page QUICK W 21 RED JACKET SEP 1856 LIVERPOOL SEP 1856 004 QUICK J 19 CITY OF SYDNEY I MAY 1857 SYDNEY MAY 1857 002 This last is the only possibility I can see for John and may well be him given the age is correct. Cannot find a death for him in NSW so we are in limbo at the moment. And can also not find any record of Robert leaving Victoria. Some answers but still questions left. CT

A little more regarding Nathaniel's daughter Charlotte Sandow QUICK bn. 1841. I have two marriages in Victoria:- Charlotte QUICK m. Nicholas PIERCE in 1856 Charlotte Sandow QUICK (born St Ives) m. John Stevens HOLLOW in 1870 Charlotte Sandow PEARCE d/o Nataniel QUICK and Susannah SANDOW died 1873 age 31. Something just ain't quite right here! BTW - John Stevens HOLLOW was also born St Ives and I can find no children for him in Victoria. Over to you my friend!

So with Christian a widow in the 1871 census, implies that John is one of the many deaths since the 1861 census.
I think I will leave the other John until I have finished putting the last of the census data in. I am finding quite a few holes so it may be worth plugging them up first.

That's fine mate - I will leave you to deal with that for the moment. At some stage I need to resurrect all the stuff I did on the Land's End Quicks and re-check it for the few that I was not sure of. Be nice to get them tidied up and have Penwith basically 'locked down'. Meantime I have diverted some of ( ) my attention to the US in search of my Trewhella families that I have been neglecting. And I am happy to say that I am having quite a bit of success including having only just found some New York marriages and death records! I have had a bit of a look at Quicks in the US, mainly in Immigration records, but there are that many of the blighters and all with the same names that it may not be an easy task to find the ones we want. And a lot of these are listed as arriving from Ireland! If you can come up with a few relatively specific things that you want to know then pass the information to me and I will see what I can find. And I have also noticed a few Glassons floating about if you have any that headed off in that direction. Before I go there is another point worth considering with these John Quicks. As we are looking specifically at the Penzance R.D. at the moment it would be worthwhile 'knocking over' the remaining Quicks in the Penwith Parishes. With FreeBMD as a guide we can cross-check information from Parishes such as Madron, Gulval, St Buryan etc. and delete them from the FreeBMD list. What is remaining after that might prove interesting and useful. CT

CT At the moment I am concentrating on two things - the first is adding the 1871 data to the earlier censuses in my spreadsheet (happy to send you an updated copy if you like). I am also looking at QUICKs born in St Ives and living outside Cornwall, which is something that I was not able to do when I originally gathered the 1841 to 1861 data. One particular William I have found and think that I may have placed him incorrectly - William Quick, age generally given as 1791. Usually living in Portbury in Somerset, aged 50 in 1841, 60 in 1851 and 71 in 1861. Was a mariner in the early days but a beer house keeper in 1861 - always said he was from St Ives. Married to Ann sometime just before the 1837 St Caths started, she was from Lancashire so probably not married in Cornwall. Children included Henry, Mary, Joanna, and William. I guessed him to be the son of John QUICK and Joanna PAYNTER, baptised in St Ives 23rd October 1792. The main draw card for me was the name Joanna. Lannanta

Deja Vu! ;D I starting discussing this bloke way, way back into last year when I was trying to sort out about 4 Williams born about the same time. From memory it included the bloke that ended up at Phillack - wife I think was Ann Dunstone. Also included would have been the fellow who married Margaret POLMEAR. I think there was one more. Ah yes - the William who married the widowed Alice LANYON at Paul in 1831. Just found some old printouts from that thread so will hunt back and locate it then add something to bring it up to the 'head of the queue' for you. CT
