Seeking death dates and place(s) for William Fuller Newton, b. 1854 London and Sarah Ellen (Vincent) Newton, b. 1854 Illogan, listed in 1901 Census as living in Canonstown with their 10 children. I have not been able to locate in Free BMD or other sites. Any clues appreciated.

It lead me to a reference to Kelly's Directory 1914 issue, which in turn listed "Newton and Sons, forename WF, Painters and Decorators". WF Newton was William Fuller Newton, my great grandfather. Tom Newton (Isambard) As supplemental questions to anyone: how can I obtain a copy of that listing in Kelley's, whether a one liner or an ad; and what sources are available that would give the names and addresses of W.F. Newton and his ten children subsequent to the 1901 Census? I assume that they would not have had private telephones. There were several of the children still living in Canonstown and the Penzance area in 1945.

Perhaps CFHS library or Cornish Studies library might have copies of old directories for the county .... or electoral rolls for years subsequent to 1901 ....?? Just a suggestion.

www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/d.asp this linkk will take you to the Leicester Univ. Online Directories site If it doesn't take you directly to the page in Kelly's then search by location for Cornwall, then in the directory search for Lelant or Painters & House Decorators, there is an entry for WF Newton & Sons but no address, Lelant is small enough for eveyone to know where to find someone. You have to hit the "next hit" button for the page to display once you have been told how many hits there are! This is a great site for all sorts of directories.

I've spent the better part of today browsing the Kelly's, with good finds.

I have not been able to locate in Free BMD or other sites. Any clues appreciated. The following is additional information regarding William Fuller Newton and family, particularly the children. From the 1901 Census (ages at census shown): William Fuller Newton 47, Sarah Ellen (Vincent) 47, Wm. Thos. 18, Richard 16, Robert 15, Hilda 13, Eveline May 12, John 10, Sarah Ellen 9, Edward Passmore 7, George Henry 5, Gladys Maud Mary 8 mos. I believe Richard died about June 1903. Wm. Thomas and John emigrated to Canada in 1911/1912. Edward Passmore married Loveday Ann Goldsworthy in Sithney in March 1925. In 1945 I believe George Henry and Sarah Ellen (Nellie) were living in Canon's Town, Eveline in Penzance, Gladys in Nancledra and Robert in Plymouth. Any information post 1901 would be appreciated. I have not found a relationship between the Newton and Passmore family lines that would explain Edward's second name.

You are all doing well here so I will limit input until I have moe time. However - the Passmore name is interesting. In the Trewhella family the name of Passmore became involved and it took me years to track it down. Unfortunately I have been able to track it only so far. James Trewhella died at St Erth in 1918. Elizabeth PASSMORE Trewhella died at Newlyn in 1942. I eventually found that the latter was Elizabeth Passmore THOMAS, daughter of William Thomas. She is supposed to have been born in St Erth about 1864 and I do not currently know the name of her mother. This is another item I need to follow up on given I have quite a few St Erth records available to me. (Problem will be if she was baptised outside that Parish or in one of the Chapels.) But it is interesting to note the name cropping up again. Ian

The Newton's were members of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Canon's Town, as was James Dunstan, Susie's maternal grandfather. William Thomas Newton and Susie Josephine Quick were married in that church 29 July 1909. Where would one go to find bmd records for the church, if preserved? The church, founded in 1878 and still extant in 1978, now appears to be some form of condo.

I should the best place would be the Cornwall Record Office in Truro where all of these Registers are supposed to be deposited once they are filled or no longer required.
Keep us posted here and I will see what more I can do.

From a copy of the death certicate for William Fuller Newton; he died in Canon's Town, Penzance 12 August 1920, age 67, cause strangulated inguinal hernia/peritonitis. His son Edward Passmore Newton was present. The search for other family information post 1901 continues. Again, compliments to the GRO, the certificate arrived here seven days after ordering.

Tom - I presume you have the marriage details for William Fuller Newton? I have located the entry in FreeBMD but that is all the information I have. Also have located the baptisms for all ten children at Hayle St Elwyn. The first five children were all baptised on the same day but, unfortunately, their dates of birth were not provided. In fact it was only George and Gladys for whom birth dates were supplied. And I think there was a transcription error involved as George was recorded as being born in 1886 when I believe it should be 1896. I still have not come up with an answer as to the name Passmore appearing in your family or, for that matter, in my own. But it is interesting that on the same day the eldest children were baptised there was also the baptism of Lillian PASSMORE monk. That is about all I can do for the moment however I would appreciate if you could supply me with the additional details as mentioned above. Would also like details of the children of William Thomas and Susie Newton if I may. Ian
