Much is known about the exploits of John Carter 'King of Prussia' and his brother Captain Harry Carter, but does anyone know any details about their family?
From reading on-line notes, I gather that their father, who was called Francis, was born in 1712 and died on 28 February 1774; their mother, 'Agnes', was born in 1714 and died in 1784. I can find an IGI birth record for a Fran Carter born 19 October 1712 s/o Fran Carter and also an IGI baptism record for an Aneis Williams d/o Stepen Williams baptised at Redruth on 26 January 1719 which could well be her. Of the parents' eight sons and two daughters of whom Harry speaks in his 'Autobiography of a Cornish Smuggler', it appears, according to the notes, that only four sons besides Harry can be traced - Thomas, whom he does not mention, was born in 1737 and died in 1818; John, whom Harry refers to as the oldest, Francis, born in 1745 and Charles born in 1757.
I am wondering whether one son was called Roger Carter.
My paternal 4xgreat-grandmother was Rebecca Ford (baptised St. Hilary 25 Nov 1761; buried St. Michael's Mount 26 Dec 1849). Rebecca was married 3 times. I myself am descended from her and her second husband Philip Calf through their daughter Arabella Ford Calf. Rebecca married Philip Calf, a mariner from Fowey, at St. Hilary on 30 August 1782. There were four children from that marriage. Following Philip's death in 1791 she married John Trannack on 13 May 1793 and had six more children by him. From the book 'The Mount People' by Jane Mason, I learned that John Trannack , the nephew of William Trannack who was a prisoner of the Napoleonic Wars for nine years, also had the misfortune to be a French prisoner during the Napoleonic Wars. John was impounded at Verdun in 1811.
However, prior to these two marriages I am interested in Rebecca Ford's first marriage. On 30 Jan 1779 Rebecca married Roger Carter at St. Hilary. There were no children from her first marriage and Roger Carter died and was buried at Breage some 20 months or so after their marriage. From the IGI I have ascertained that Roger Carter was baptised at Breage on 19 November 1754 and his parents are named as Francis Carter and Annice. I have ascertained that Francis Carter and Annice Williams were married at Breage on 26 April 1736. Of course, I am wondering whether these two are the same parents as the Francis and Agnes named as the parents of John and Harry Carter. I have found IGI baptism records at Breage for several children for Francis and Annice/Annis Carter:
John Carter, baptised 25 March 1738;
Frances Carter, baptised 9 March 1740;
Ann Carter, baptised 28 December 1742;
Alse Carter, baptised 25 March 1747;
Edward Carter, baptised 15 September 1751;
Roger Carter, baptised 10 nov 1754;
Charles Carter, baptised 11 Mar 1757.
Unfortunately, I can find no baptism records for Thomas (1737), Francis (1740) or Harry (1749).
Any information would be greatly apprecreciated.
