Thought I would start a new thread to deal with some of those annoying loose ends we have.
I have now identified the second wife of Benedict QUICK who was baptised at St Ives 16th January 1791 s/o John and Jane.
But there is still at least one problem.
Benedict was first married to Elizabeth RICHARDS 10th November 1822 at St Ives and must have died prior to August 1863 when Benedict, as a widower, married for the second time.
I have located Benedict in the 1861 Census and Elizabeth was then still living.
The problem is that I cannot find a Death Record for her - anywhere!
The Census records are consistent with her age and birthplace indicating her birth about 1794 at St Ives.
In this case she is almost certainly the Elisabeth baptised 2nd December 1793 at St Ives d/o David and Elizabeth (nee HAIN).
Elizabeth HAIN is probably Elizabeth HAYNE bp. 28th October 1770 St Ives d/o William Harry and Margery (nee THOMAS) HAIN.
Afraid I have digressed a little - but she does classify as a 'loose end'.
And now to the second wife of Benedict QUICK - Jane THOMAS, widow, daughter of Thomas WARREN.
I had my suspicions about her identity some time ago but had difficulty finding anything to support them.
But now I have found what I need.
In the 1861 Census at Fore Street, St Ives, Jane THOMAS was recorded as 'unmarried', age 66 and living on her own.
This seemed the only possible Jane THOMAS to have married Benedict QUICK.
So I had a look for her in 1851 and had a hard time of it.
I eventually used FreeCEN to help and eventually found her.
In FreeCEN she is listed as JANE but in the index for Ancestry her name is transcribed as JAM!
Jane is then age 56, widow, living at Digey, St Ives her daughter Mary Ann then age 13.
This looks much more like the required spouse.
Her age on both occasions gives a birth of around 1794/1795 and IGI shows only one possible Jane WARREN as follows:-
Jane d/o Thomas and Jane WARREN bp. 31st May 1795 St Ives.
Thomas WARREN, mariner, married Jane JOHNS 20th April 1794 at St Ives.
Thomas appears to have died within a few years as his widow then married Matthew HARVEY at St Ives 22nd August 1802.
The next part of the problem was that I could not find a marriage for Jane WARREN to anyone named THOMAS which indicated two things.
Either the marriage was elsewhere or not in currently available PRs OR that the marriage to Benedict QUICK was actually a THIRD marriage for Jane.
What I have found is:-
Thomas ROWE married Jane WARREN 22nd March 1817 St Ives
James THOMAS married Jane ROWE 15th June 1836 St Ives
Now to check children, burials etc.
There are two Thomas ROWEs buried at St Ives around the right time.
One in 1831 age 66 is probable a little two old being 30 years senior to Jane.
But the other might be the one.
Thomas ROWE buried 13th January 1834 age 51 (born about 1783).
I have found three children for Thomas and Jane ROWE:-
Jane Johns bp. 4th June 1819
Ann bp. 1st August 1823
Alice bp. 11th July 1828
;D ;D
An entry on the OPC site from the West Briton supports the above:-
17th June 1836
James THOMAS, builder married Mrs Jane ROWE, widow at St Ives last week
I just love it when a plan comes together! ;D
And the 1841 Census
Digey, St Ives
James THOMAS, 50, joiner
Jane do., 45
Mary do., 4
Alice ROW, 13
That about seals it nicely.
Re: Thomas ROWE - his occupation was recorded as 'labourer' or 'mason' so the 1834 burial is most likely him.
Had he been a mariner I would have had doubts but it does now seem we are looking for a Thomas ROWE born about 1783.
Apart from checking for further children and the burial for Jame THOMAS that is yet anoher 'loose end' very much tidied up. ;D
