Hello Brenda, I cant help with her forebears, but these are the beneficiaries of her will (which you may already be aware of): WILL: Joane EDWARDS of St Just in Penwith widow dated 2nd Sept 1659: to daughter Margery, wife of William JOHN of Penzance £5 & best petticoat; to Thomas, William and Margery JOHN, sons & dgr of William and Margery JOHN, £5 each; to Jane ROBERTS, daughter of Noell ROBERTS by my dgr Mary, £5; to Joan, dgr of son Martyn EDWARDS, a chest; to son Justinian EDWARDS, residue & executor; The sign of Joane EDWARDS, proved 16 Aug 1660. (ref AP/E/240 - LDS film 1565838) She doesnt name any Downing family so not much help unfortunately. Her husbands will was proved in 1657 and gives no Downing clues either. Good luck, Mike

Can I ask on what basis you know she was born in St. Just about 1594? The St. Just Easter books of 1589-1596 list all adults in the parish, and I can find no DOWNING family. The nearest surname is DONOWE - could this be a derivation?

I would suggest that the birth date of 'about 1594' may be courtesy of IGI.
The 'assumption' is that the Groom would be age 25 and the Bride 21.
So a girl married in 1615 is 'assumed' to have been born about 21 years earlier - thus 1594.
I know little of this family but would suggest that, from what I have seen, it is more a name associated with the Parish of Paul.
But I think the best possibility of finding parents for Joan would be if there was a surviving Will for one or both her parents - or even possible a sibling.
