I have two men named Andrew QUICK in my database who seem to be 'lost in translation'. I will be discussing the second of the following:- Ann d/o Andrew and Jane QUICK bp. 4th March 778 nd buried 5th March 1778 at St Ives That is absolutely all I know of this family so it is possible that either the father or the mother was recorded incorrectly. Certainly no marriage found and no other indication to the identities of either Andrew or Jane. The more important is this one:- Thomasine Curnow QUICK bp. 20th October 1861 at Towednack daughter of Andrew and Mary QUICK of Brega (This is from the OPC site). I have not yet found a marriage for Andrew and Mary in the PRs and I can not find a match for this in FreeBMD. The family cannot be found in 1871 and by 1881 there appear to have been only three Andrew Quicks in the Census who had been born in Cornwall. The earliest of these was the husband of Nancy Martins and he had been born at St Ives about 1831. We are then looking at births around 1864 and 1875 at St Ives and it is obvious neither of these could have been the father of Thomasine Curnow QUICK in 1861. I can also find no further record of Thomasine Curnow QUICK! To me it seems obvious there is a CURNOW connection somewhere and it is becoming equally obvious that this may have been an illegitimate child. Who was this Andrew QUICK? Who was Mary? What happened to these people? Give it your best shot people 'cus ah is shaw stuk raht nah!

It's OK folks you can chuck the Aspros back in the medicine cabinet because I think I have just solved the mystery! Having had no luck with other avenues I decided that a few more minutes without sleep should not do me too much harm! Decided to check the 1861 Census (being very close behind the baptism of Thomasine Curnow QUICK) and see just who was resident at Breja, Towednack at the time. And there it was the widowed John QUICK, 56, with sons Matthew, 21, Robert, 11, and Christopher, 9. So Andrew was a son of John - NOT! A look just a little further down the page provided the answer. Breja, Towednack Andrew BERRYMAN, (crossed out), (crossed out), 30, tin miner, Towednack Mary Q do., wife, mar., 21, Towednack THOMASINE C do., 6 weeks, Towednack Checking the OPC site I found this:- Towednack 26th January 1861 Andrew BERRIMAN of full age, miner of Breja Towednack, son of William BERRIMAN, miner Mary Quick CURNOW of full age, single of Penderleath daughter of Peter CURNOW, farmer So Thomasine Curnow QUICK was actually Thomasine Curnow BERRYMAN and daughter of Andrew and Mary Quick BERRYMAN. There is something else for us all to think about - is it not! ;D Andrew BERRYMAN bp. 17th May 1829 Towednack s/o William and Wilmot (nee EDWARDS) BERRYMAN Mary Quick CURNOW bp. 19th January 1840 Towednack d/o Peter and Mary (nee QUICK) CURNOW I knew it was about time to start back on Zennor and Towednack with these QUICKs!
