I am interested primarily in the OATS family in St. Just in Penwith, Sancreed, and Paul. Rob Oats has already supplied much of the information I have concerning the family and history of Richard Jeffery OATS 1831-?. I am primarily interested in his lineage prior to 1800. Richard Jeffery OATS was born to Richard OATS (b. about 1808 or 1811) and Dianne Jeffery in Paul in 1831. In the 1841 Census, the family is listed as living in Brane with Richard Jeffery listed as the eldest son. I have been told there is a baptismal record for Richard Jeffery OATS' father that lists Richard OATS and Grace OATS as the parents. If you have further information and are willing to share, please feel free to contact me or supply the information here in the St. Just Journings area. Thank you for your kind attention.

Most of the detailed info is on my database but Richard (bpt 2 Sept 1810 in Paul) was the son of Richard and Grace DANIEL. Detail of Grace's parents are there as well. The only real pointer for this Richard is in the 1841 Census which gives an age of 60. The enumerators aged them to the nearest five years, so he was closer to 60 than 55 or 65. This puts his birth at around 1780. The database that I have on baptisms indicates that he could be the son of Richard and Ann SHAKERLEY. They had a son, Richard bapt 11 Jun 1780. There are no records pointing to his marriage. Richard and Ann were married 17 Dec 1775 and their last child, William, was born 1786. This is a short period and I must assume that something happened to Richard because there are no further children recorded. There is no definitive evidence linking this couple to Richard (1760). However naming patterns match and other Richards born in the period are accounted for by marriages or death records.

Rob - for my own benefit at this stage - would Grace DANIEL be the daughter of John and Grace (nee WOOLCOCK) and baptised at Sancreed 30th December 1787?
If so then that family, as I understand it, can be traced back through Morvah with connections to EDWARDS, MADDERN and NICHOLAS families.

I have some very "ancient Oats" but they are a bit of a brickwall---- Christabel/Cristabel Oats est. birth 1679 of Feock who marries John Rouse/Rose 1st April 1700 at Feock or Saint Breock!!! I got this info from IGI so I don't know how reliable it is. I had a brickwall with the Rose family until I found the variant Rouse. John Rouse and Chirstabel have John Rose who marries Mary Cock (another brickwall, daughter of Erasmus Cock and Winnifred Edwards) Katherine Rose. I think I may be on the right lines here because John Rose and Mary Cock have the following children, Cristabel Anne 1 John Ann 2- marries 1) William Note then 2) Thomas Colensoe- hence my connection. Elizabeth _________ As for Cristabel Oats' lineage there is one curious possibility, I think she may have been the daughter of Thomas Oats who was in turn the son of Thomas Oats and Mary Cock. If this is correct there may be a connection between the Cock and Oats families... afterall chickens love grain don't they? If anyone has any connection or info please let me know.
