Here are three men named John QUICK, all recorded as 'of St Ives', that require identification.
1. John QUICK of St Ives, barber, married Jane WEBBER at Gulval 2nd May 1811
2. John QUICK of St Ives married Phyllis READ at Madron 8th August 1783
3. John QUICK married Elizabeth COCK, widow, at St Ives 2nd August 1757
The limited information I have been able to find is just that - limited!
1. John QUICK and Jane WEBBER
Jane remarried at St Ives in January 1840 to John WEARNE and this was the subject of another thread a few months ago.
It appears that John and Jane QUICK returned to St Ives after being married and their three children were baptised at St Ives.
No burial can be found for John at St Ives prior to Civil Registration however FreeBMD records the deaths of a John QUICK in 1837 and another John QUICK in 1839 - both in the Penzance R.D.
It is most likely that one of these is the John involve here but until the Burial Record is viewed to ascertain John's age it is extremely difficult to work out just who he was.
He 'could' have been the son of Israel and Catherine QUICK in which case he was baptised at St Ives 20th October 1793 but he would then have been just 18 when he married.
From the earlier discussion we know that Jane WEBBER was baptised at Bath in 1787.
There are two things that would fit with John being son of Israel and Catherine:-
a. His second daughter was named Christian
b. John was a 'barber' and Israel and Catherine had a son Paul baptised in 1803 who was lso a 'barber'.
Thoughts please.
2. John QUICK and Phyllis READ
From some searching tonight I have identified Phyllis READ as having been baptised at Madron 30th November 1755 d/o James REED.
Phyllis was, therefore, 28 when she married John QUICK.
Phyllis QUICK was buried at Madron 12th November 1794 but I do not know what became of John.
He may have re-married but I have not found any evidence of that.
It is also difficult to identify John because there appear to have been no children from the marriage to Phyllis.
Of the likely candidates at the moment I have:-
John bp. 3rd May 1757 St Ives s/o John and Jane (nee MICHELL) QUICK
John bp. 29th April 1744 St Ives s/o Thomas and Jane (nee CANARTHEN) QUICK
Again - help!
3. John QUICK and Elizabeth COCK, widow
This one seems the most difficult given that Elizabeth was a widow when she married John QUICK.
But I have managd to find out something.
A search of St Ives marriages provided no marriage for someone named COCK to an Elizabeth of any surname.
And then I asked myself a question - why was it nine years after the marriage that the first of two known children was baptised.
And on looking at the names of those children I had to ask myself another question:-
Why was the son named ANTHONY!
The only other Anthony QUICK that I know of was the son of Thomas and Zenobia and he died in 1698!
So I began to think about the situation and came up with an idea!
Using IGI I entered a search for an ANTHONY COCK who had married someone named ELIZABETH.
This seemed a logical start given there appeared no other reason to name a son Anthony. It was possibly either the name of Elizabeth's first husband or possibly the name of her father - but I did not yet know her maiden name.
Guess What!
ANTONY COCK married Elizabeth BENNY of St Ives 12th June 1752 at St Gluvias
And then:-
Anthony s/o Anthony and Elizabeth COCK baptised 26th November 1752 at St Ives
It would appear I now know who Elizabeth was but, unfortunately, I now have to search IGI again to find a possible baptism for her.
Working on the assumption that Elizabeth was born at St Ives (and using the paramaters I associate with minimum/maximum age for marriage and childbirth) I can find only one possible entry:-
Elizabeth BINNEY bp. 17th October 1727 at St Ives d/o Henry and Elizabeth
Henry BINNY m. Elizabeth BURRELL 28th December 1723 at St Ives
Elizabeth wife of Henry BINNY buried 1727 at St Ives
Henry BINNY, w., m. Elizabeth STEVENS 28th April 1729 at St Ives
Henry BINNY died in 1734 - "drowned whilst master of a ship"
He had two children - Grace and Elizabeth - from his first marriage and four - Mary, Mary, Henry and Margaret - from his second.
Henry and Margaret were named in the Will of their grandfather Paul STEVENS in 1744.
Based on this information I have the following possibilities for John QUICK:-
bp. 30th January 1715 at Lelant s/o Andrew and Margaret
bp. 26th August 1725 St Ives s/o James and Margaret
bp. 16th March 1728 St Ives s/o Andrew and Mary
Over to you sleuths. ;D
