You’re quite right. I’ve been riveted by Ralphs and Rebeckas and all that has brought me is endless speculation.
Today I’ve been concertedly searching for more Andrew Leahs but with a notable lack of success. I followed up your tip about the Andrew Jobe/Christian Nicholls family at St. Ives and found five children but no Andrews. Interestingly enough, their kids appear to have no descendants. Three sons died in infancy or childhood and both daughters remained spinsters until their deaths in their 80s.
Andrew JOBE married Christian NICHOLLS at St Ives 10 October 1667
• Patience bp 13 Sep 1668 St. Ives, d. 09 Feb 1753 St. Ives
• Thomas bp 29 Aug 1671 St. Ives, d. 02 Sep 1671 St. Ives
• Anthony bp 16 Aug 1673 St. Ives, d. 03 May 1683 St. Ives
• Enidor bp. 25 Dec 1676 St. Ives, d. 28 Mar 1677 St. Ives
• Jone bp. 21 Jul 1678 St. Ives, d. 31 Dec 1758 St. Ives
I wondered if the name “Enidor” might be a mistranscription of “Andrew” so I took a look at the baptismal and burial films. Both entries are fuzzy but the name isn’t Andrew; rather it looks more like...Enidor.
Searching for more Enidors as either a forename or surname led nowhere.
I did find a burial record for Christian (Nicholls) Jobe dated 13 Dec 1706 St. Ives. I also found the 1605 and 1606 burial records for Andrew Jobe but no further information. Presumably one was for Andrew, father of the above family, and the other was for – maybe – his father? More speculation!
As for the Andrew Jobe who married Christian Nicholls in 1667, the only baptismal record I can find in the relevant period is:
• Andrew Jope, bp 1621 Devon (film at FS Centres, members only). An earlier Andrew Jope was bp 1583 in St. Andrew, Plymouth, Devon.
It’s more likely that “our” Andrew was born around St. Ives about a decade before the baptismal records start in 1651.
I’m wondering if the forename Andrew may have come through the Nicholls side of the family? Christian Nicholls may very well have been born at St. Ives before the records started but I ran some searches for her anyway. FS presented me with:
• Cristian Nicolas bp 02 Aug 1640 St. Gluvias, daughter of Rychard Nicolas bp 1609 and Patien (possibly Lugye) bp 1607
I rather liked that as Andrew and Christian’s eldest daughter was named Patience so I took a better look. No Andrews. She had three sibs, all bp at St. Gluvias: Tamsen bp 1636 d. bef 1639; Tamsen bp 1639; and James bp 1643. Her paternal grandfather was likely Nyclys Nyclys bp around 1585.
The OPC gave me far too many options. It spit out 143 Andrew Nicholls baptismal records, 71 of them in Gulval. The same dateless, placeless search found only 33 Andrew Leahs. Most of the records are post-1800, which thankfully whittles the searching options down to a handful. Few of the hits were from St Ives although I did find William and Francis Nicholls, born to Christian and Andrew Nicholls of St. Ives in 1775 and 1778 respectively.
I’m not particularly adept or experienced at researching wills but I’ll take a stab at it tomorrow -- no time like the present to learn. Many thanks for your continuing suggestions and help.
I love your OPC tip!
