I have just pretty much completed some work on a HOLLOW link and thought it worthwhile posting here given we have members with interests in that family.
This began with a 'supposed' marriage between Thomas Henry TREWHELLA and Elizabeth HOLLOW and I needed to sort the TREWHELLA side in particular.
There is quite a bit to read but there are links to the Parishes of Zennor, Towednack and Sennen as well as to the UREN family of Penzance.
All of this was for an offline contact which is why I had not poste anything before.
So here it is for perusal, comment etc.
The Saga of Elizabeth HOLLOW and Thomas Henry TREWHELLA
I will begin by saying that there was no marriage between the above-named couple although it would appear there was certainly a relationship.
It has taken me quite some time to piece this all together and there have been a number of twists and turns in the story. But I believe I am now able to 'paint the picture' and explain events.
Elizabeth HOLLOW was baptised at Zennor 29th March 1840 d/o Matthew and Elizabeth (nee CHELLEW)
In the 1841, 1851 and 1861 Census Elizabeth was ¡¥at home¡¦ with her parents and siblings with her recorded age being consistent with a birth about 1839.
However finding her in the 1871 Census proved a little difficult although I did soon find her by process of elimination and by further investigation of others in the household in which she was enumerated.
1871 Census - Trevelly, Sennen
Thomas HOLLOW, head, mar., 25, farmer 4 acres, Zennor
Agnes do., wife, mar., 22, Zennor
Elizabeth do., sister-in-law, unm., 22, dress maker, Zennor
This surely could not be the Elizabeth I was searching for as she is too young by 10 years however there was absolutely no other possibility I could find who could have been the correct Elizabeth.
I therefore decided to see what I could find out about Thomas and Agnes given that Elizabeth was recorded as a ¡¥sister-in-law¡¦ to Thomas.
The results of this proved that Agnes was the daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth (nee Bottrell) HOLLOW. (Search of baptisms, marriages etc provided the evidence.)
Elizabeth was recorded in the Census as ¡¥unmarried¡¦. She must therefore have been the sister of Agnes unless, of course, she were a step-sister to Thomas.
But this is yet another example of some of the errors that can be found in the Census records as she was indeed the sister of Agnes and should actually have been recorded as age 32.
And from now the story gets interesting and the twists are introduced with the first appearing in the household of Matthew and Elizabeth HOLLOW in the 1881 Census.
1881 Census - Boskerris, Lelant
(Source: FHL Film 1341562 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 2340 Folio 75 Page 8)
Mathew HOLLOW, head, mar., 63, farmer of 60 acres, St Ives
Elisabeth do., wife, mar., 59, St Ives
Susan A do., daur, unm., 22, Towednack
Arthur T do., son, unm., 21, Towednack
Kate RICHARDS, daur, mar., 20, Towednack
Sarah J HOLLOW, daur, unm., 14, Uny Lelant
James do., son, 12, scholar, Uny Lelant
FREDRICK do., SON, 6, scholar, Uny Lelant
My maths tells me that young FREDRICK was born about 1874/5 at which time ¡¥mother¡¦ Elizabeth would have been about 54.
That being nigh on an impossibility in those days I would suggest that he was actually a Grandson.
If not actually an impossibility this would certainly be very high on the list of improbabilities.
The question is ¡V just which of the children of Matthew and Elizabeth was his parent?
In the 1891 Census ¡¥Fred¡¦ is still living with Matthew and Elizabeth but is now recorded as ¡¥grandson¡¦ and the inference I draw from this is that he was the illegitimate son of one of Matthew¡¦s daughters.
He 'could' have been a son of Thomas and Agnes HOLLOW but all their children were born at Sennen and I have found no evidence of Frederick ever being with that family.
It appears most probable that Frederick was a son of Elizabeth HOLLOW - based on information provided.
Unfortunately I can not find Frederick in the 1901 Census and I can find no record of Marriage or Death for him in which case it is possible he had left the UK.
And it is at this point that Thomas Henry TREWHELLA enters the scenario via a Birth Certificate in my possession.
Year - 1880
Registration District - Penzance
No. - 390
When Born - 24th August 1880
Where Born - 91 Marketjew Street, Penzance
Name, if any - Thomas Henry
Sex - Boy
Name of Father - Thomas Henry TREWHELLA
Name of Mother - Elizabeth TREWHELLA formerly HOLLOW
Father¡¦s Occupation - jobbing labourer
Registration - [X] The mark of Elizabeth TREWHELLA, mother, 91 Marketjew Penzance
When Registered - 16th October 1880
The indication from this is that Thomas Henry TREWHELLA and Elizabeth HOLLOW were married and that the marriage occurred sometime during the 1870's.
However there is no record in St Catherine¡¦s House (or anywhere else I have searched) of such a marriage having occurred ¡V at least not in the UK.
It is, of course, conceivable that the marriage occurred elsewhere. But there is no evidence to suggest Elizabeth had been out of the Country.
So now let us consider the 1881 Census.
91 Market Jew St & 1 Gas Court (Madron) Penzance
Elizabeth HOLLOW, head, WIDOW, 39, shopkeeper, Zennor
Thomas H T do., son, 7 mths, Penzance
Thos HICKS, boarder, unm., 27, carpenter, Camborne
There are a couple of interesting points to be noted here.
1. Elizabeth is now Elizabeth Hollow, WIDOW.
2. Thomas Henry TREWHELLA is now Thomas H T HOLLOW
Both of these points suggest an illegitimate child.
And from the Cornwall OPC site we have the following Burial:-
Parish - Penzance St Mary (Madron Chapelry)
Date - 3rd August 1881
Name - Thomas Henry Trewhella HOLLOW
Age - 11 months
Residence - Gas Court
I will now turn my attention to the father ¡V Thomas Henry TREWHELLA.
Having done extensive research on the TREWHELLA (var.) families over many years I can find only ONE possible person who could be the man named on the Birth Certificate as the father of the above child.
Thomas Henry TREWHEELA son of Thomas Henry and Grace of Boskednan baptised 17th June 1838 at Madron
Thomas Henry TREWHEELA married Grace COCK 15th May 1836 at Madron
Thomas Henry TREWHELA son of Henry and Jane of Buswarthen baptised 1st June 1817 at Madron
Henry TREVELA married Jane GRENFELL 4th June 1803 at St Just in Penwith
And now for the TWIST!
Thomas Henry TREWHEELA, gardener, of Tresco, Scilly
Married 18th June 1859 St Mary¡¦s, Isles of Scilly
Mary Ann Gowidge GALLOWAY of Tresco, Scilly
(Mary Ann was born at Woolwich, Kent in 1830 daughter of Peter and Charlotte GALLOWAY)
In 1861 Thomas Henry and Mary Ann were at Block House, Tresco, Isles of Scilly.
By 1871 Thomas and Mary Ann had returned to the mainland and were living at Tredavoe, Paul.
Thomas TREWHELLA, age 40, of Hea Moor was buried 23rd June 1880 at Madron.
1881 Census - Penzance
1 Hockings Court, North Street
Mary Ann TREWHELLA, head, WIDOW, 46, tailoress, Woolwich, Kent
Mary Ann HIDEONS, boarder, unm., 70, retired domestic servant, Newlyn West, Cornwall
In 1891 Mary Ann was living at Trewhella Court, Penzance.
Make what you will of that!
Elizabeth never married Thomas TREWHELLA yet she was recorded as a widow in 1881 and whilst the child¡¦s birth was recorded as Thomas Henry TREWHELLA he was baptised as Thomas Henry Trewhella HOLLOW.
The father, as recorded on the Birth Certificate, died two months before the child was born and is a most interesting point as it raises the question of whether he WAS actually the father of the child. And perhaps we may never know for sure.
And one must wonder what sort of tensions there may have been at the time of these events given that Mary Ann, widow of Thomas, and Elizabeth HOLLOW would seem to have been living quite near each other. (If my recollection of that part of Penzance is anywhere near accurate!)
To my knowledge there were no children from the marriage of Thomas and Mary Ann.
My next objective was to see what became of Elizabeth HOLLOW in the aftermath of these events.
To my chagrin I could not find her in either the 1891 or the 1901 Census!!!
What I decided to do was to locate other members of her family and see if I could pick up any clues and here is what I found:-
1891 Census - Causeway Head, Penzance
William UREN, head, mar., 48, carrier, Penzance
Elizabeth do., wife, mar., 46, Zennor
William HOLLOW, nephew, 15, page boy, Lelant
Maggie do., niece, 13, scholar, Lelant
Isabella do., niece, 3, Lelant
Edgar WATSON, nephew, 17, fitter, Sennen
With these children as nephews and nieces it appears obvious that this must be the daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth!
1901 Census - Carninny, Lelant
William UREN, head, mar., 66, farmer, Penzance
Elizabeth do., wife, mar., 60, Zennor
Matthew HOLLOW, g¡¦father, mar., 85, retired farmer, St Erth
Elizabeth do., g¡¦mother, mar., 79, St Ives
Isabella do., niece, 12, Lelant
Philip ROGERS, nephew, 1, Lelant
This one proves that Elizabeth is the Elizabeth HOLLOW I was looking for so the next step is to find the marriage.
I found an entry on the Cornwall OPC Site which lead me to the PR for Penzance St Paul

So yet another problem presents itself! - I now need to identify a previous marriage for William UREN along with identifying his parents.
I think I have now made some positive identifications so will set the information out in a time line.

So we seem to return full-circle to Zennor!
At this point I am going to rest from this one but I do plan to pick up thread later and see exactly where each of the nephews and nieces fit into the picture.
