As part of my review of this problem I have had another look at the 1841 Census to see if William and Mary LANYON might have still been living.
It appears that William has died by then but Mary is certainly still alive and living at Crowlas.
1841 Census Ludgvan
Crowlas
Mary LANYON, 60, ind.
William do., 30, miner
Martin TREWHELLA, 30, miner
Sarah do., 20
William do., 70, ind.
Martin do., 2
Sarah do., 5m
Job MORRIS, 30, miner
Matthew TREWHELLA, 35, miner
Julia do., 35
Julia do., 13
Matthew do., 11
Jane do., 4
William do., 1
So Mary was born sometime between 1776 and 1781 but I do not yet know where.
Another clue to her identity may lie in the fact that she and William named their first son Joseph Martin LANYON.
So far I can find a number of Mary MARTINs whose father was Joseph but there is only one that fits as far as possible birth dates are concerned.
Mary d/o Joseph and Jane MARTIN bp. 6th August 1780 St Agnes near Truro
Unfortunately Mary seems to have died prior to the 1851 Census so I cannot find out from that source where she was born.
** If anyone has access to Ludgvan Burial Records I would appreciate a lookup to see if burials for William and Mary might be found.
William should be somewhere between about 1817 and 1841.
Mary will be between 1841 and 1851 Census.
At the moment I am of the opinion that William LANYON was probably baptised at Gulval in 1777 son of William and Mary (nee POOLEY) who married at Ludgvan in 1776.
But here is something worth noting!
Joseph MARTYN married Jane ARGALL 3rd April 1780 at St Agnes
The following children then appear at St Agnes:-
MARY bp. 6th August 1780
James bp. 14th July 1782
Jenny bp. 19th June 1785
William bp. 9th April 1787
JULIA bp. 24th June 1788
These are the only children baptised at St Agnes to a Joseph and Jane MARTIN (var.).
But then at Ludgvan we have the following - also the only children at any time baptised to a Joseph and Jane MARTIN (var.)
Sibella bp. 27th March 1791
Joseph bp. 19th May 1793
John bn. 27th September 1797 bp, 28th January 1798
William
Argal bp. 26th December 1802
Gertrude bp. 7th December 1806
I do believe I may have identified Mary MARTIN! ;D
And there are further clues to suggest I may be correct in the identification of William LANYON.
In 1851 at Ludgvan there are two particular LANYONs that become of interest:-
James born Gulval c. 1785
Richard born Gulval c. 1788
James s/o William and Mary (Pooley) LANYON was baptised at Gulval 22nd August 1784
Richard s/o William and Mary (Pooley) LANYON was baptised at Gulval 25th January 1789
With the name not being overly common at Ludgvan I would be prepared to suggest that I do indeed have the right family!
Any and all comments welcom, please!
Checking IGI and it would appear a very good chance that Jane ARGALL is:-
Jane d/o William and Jane ARGAL bp. 4th April 1762 Perrnazabuloe
This also from IGI:-
William ARGALL married Jane DUNN 21st April 1755 Perranzabuloe
IGI also notes William Argall born 1733 Perranzabuloe and 'died' 26th December 1788
IGI again notes Jane DUNN born 1717 (
) and 'died' 27th January 1813
From Phillimore:-
Thomas PENROSE of St Allen m. Sybella ARGAL 12th July 1755 Perranzabuloe
William ARGEL married Jane DUNN, widow of St Agnes 21st April 1755 Perranzabuloe
