Cornishmade and Cornish Terrier – my heroes!
Thanks so very much for your help. I’m surrounded by bits of paper as I speak and trying to make some order out of it. Much as I’d like to comment on everything, especially the Gwinear connection, I won’t else it will get too confusing, but I’m grateful and interested in it all and have noted all information to come back and discuss with you a little later.
1. Robert Glasson s/o Robert bp 27 June 1724.If I start with the Robert Glasson I had as 1720-1790:
Thanks to you both for looking and having triple checked myself I can’t find a Robert Glasson/Glazon/Glassen born in 1720 either, so I am sure you are right about 1724. I hadn’t put a source for it being 1720 – I assume I stupidly was convinced of the date after seeing it online so many times. However, this does change things dramatically (see later).
So more about this Robert, (now!) born 1724:
I initially found the marriage of Robert Glassen and Susannah Mitchell on 6 August 1746 at Gwenapp on OPC Database
Then, initially on IGI I found the following children – all born to them in Crowan
Dorothy bp. 24 June 1747
Mary b. 17 July 1748
Robert bp. 15 October 1749
Ann bp 3 March 1750
John bp. 19 May 1752
Richard bp. 15 April 1754
William of Crowan bp. 2 August 1755 (my line – St Aubyns Arms etc)
Elizabeth bp 17 June 1757
Robert’s will dated written 28 July1788 and proved 20 February 1790 mentioned wife Susannah, sons Robert, John, Richard and William and daughter’s (not named). Also granddaughter Mary George (daughter Mary had married Theophilus George in 1768 at Crowan)
So although I realise these sources can be unreliable, it did all seem to check out. From the will I assumed he died early 1790 (or late 1789) but haven’t been able to find it yet.
I had thought Robert b 1724’s parents were John Glazon and Dorothy Dorcote Verrant of Camborne who married on 7 Nov 1710.
I found the following children, son of John Glasson/Glazond, from the Camborne Parish register:
William bp 2 Sept 1711
John bp 29 August 1713
Barbara bp 16 Feb 1715
John bp 10 Nov 1719
Dorothy bp 22 Feb 1720
Mary bp 7 Sept 1723
Charles bp 8 April 1726
Robert…
I admit I could find no mention of Robert between these dates in the parish registers with a father John, however in John’s will it DOES mention a son Robert - wife Dorothy, sons William, John, Robert and Charles and daughters Barbara and Dorothy. (No Mary)
So who is this Robert mentioned in the will, who isn’t the father of William of Crowan and probably NOT born in 1724?
So leaving this puzzle for a moment we come to…
2. Robard Glassond s/o Robard bp 7 Dec 1712.From your excellent information Senior Robard married Margery Warring at Camborne in 1711, and is possibly the same Robert Glasson bp 10 May 1682 whose own father was John of Gwinear.
(As an aside this seemed to ring a vague bell, and now found I had previously made a note about this Robard and have actually written ‘is Robard b 1682 in Gwinear the son of John Glasson and Elinor Russell?) But that’s for later!)
Looking at the entries I assume that Robard and Robert are interchangeable names (correct me if I am drastically wrong here). And so, as you stated Robard/Robert Glasson married Margery Wering on 26 Dec 1711.
I have found on Camborne Parish Records that the children listed after 1711 with father to Robard are:
Robard/Robert (as above) bp 7 Dec 1712
Elizabeth bp. 17 March 1713
Mary bp 17 March 1715
Constance bp 27 Sept 1717
Elizabeth bp 19 April 1720
Jone bp. 22 July 1722
John bp 10 July 1726…
…there is also a William (son of Robard) bp. 8 Nov 1729 but this child could be a son of father Robard or eldest son Robard who would have been 17.
Which Robert?I hear what you say, Ian, about suspecting there was only one Robert Senior, and we’re lacking in deaths but I’m confused as I can see three. We know at least one of them moved to Crowan but what happened to the others?
1. Robert b 1724 s/o Robert…was he definitely the one who married Susannah and fathered William or did he die young/move away?
2. Robert b 1711 s/o Robert…did he live to adulthood, who did he marry, could HE have married Susannah and fathered William in Crowan?
3. Robert s/o son of John Glasson (birthdate unknown)…did he died, was John the brother or cousin of one of the Roberts?
4. How are the father’s of Robert 1 and 2 related.
5 (thinking out of the box) Could, with a slight shuffle in dates, Robert no 2 have fathered Robert no 1?
These are the questions I’m asking myself tonight and any help VERY gratefully received.
Oh and please put me right on any mistakes above!
Best wishes,
Carole
