My closest Brick Wall is Henry James who married Mary Daniel. The family bible didn't go back to him. The only Henry James I could find baptised in Madron was '17 July 1768 Henry base son of Mary James'. She appears to be the daughter of John James and baptised 14 Jan 1746. In the parish records there were three mens' names who were responsible for the child. Two appeared to be older men and one younger man David Edwards. I can't find the paper right now but my problem is that there was also a death of a Henry James a short time after the birth of this Henry James? Is there another Henry hiding somewhere nearby who died or who should be my Henry? mnauen

The only other Henry James I can find (IGI) born/baptised in the same general area around the right time were in 1767 and 1770. The Henry baptised in 1767 was son of Robert James and Susanna (Roope). But he is supposed to have married Martha Casley at St Just in 1794 and died in 1859. The other Henry was baptised in 1770 as son of William James and Elizabeth (Stephens) and it is this bloke I initially thought might have been your man. But both of the above were baptised at St Just in Penwith. If you could locate your 'paperwork' and provide me with the details of the child of 'Mary James' and also the details regarding the burial of the 'other' Henry I might be able to do more. Unless there is an age given for the 'burial', or we can find a Will, we might have a problem for a while. The fact we have events at Madron is possibly confusing things a little and it may possibly be that it was the illegitimate son of Mary involved in the burial you mentioned. It is also possible that Mary was not 'of Madron' but it was there she had her child baptised. Question - is there a burial 'very close' to that of the Henry James you have mentioned. If so, then it could mean that it was mother and daughter. Henry 'could' be son of William and Elizabeth of St Just in Penwith but ..... 'Your' Henry was buried in January 1832 with his age recorded as 63 and this relates to a birth of about 1868 which matches very well with him being the son of Mary James. And the 'Madron connection' is also prominent. Please send what further data you can and I will take another look at it for you.

Hi! I found the record of the Bastardy Bond. 2 July 1768 the Obligees for the support of Mary James' base son were David Edwards Madron, Thomas Osborn Zennor, Thomas Jenkin Madron. There is a David Edwards who married Christian Uren in 1778 in Madron and a Thomas Osborne who was married to a Catherine Edwards in Zennor but I find no connection with the Thomas Jenkin from Madron yet. They must have supported him reasonably because he signed his name at his marriage. Miriam N

It is beginning to look like this is probably 'your' Henry James but it would be interesting to find out about his mother. I would also suggest that the David Edwards married in 1778 is likely not the man involved in the Bastardy Bond given that young Henry was born 10 years earlier. It could be, of course, that David was an older man, but I would suggest that it may have been another David Edwards, perhaps his father. Let's see what more can be found here and work from there.

The baptismal registration I have for Mary is 'Mary daughter of John James Jan 14 1746' 'at Penzance'. The copy was sent from the County Records Office in Truro with the bastardy bond and the photo copy of Henry's baptism registration Miriam N

I have just checked and the death I mentioned was not Henry sone of Mary but the Mary whose baptism record the County Records Office sent me. She was bap. Jan 14 1746 (0ur 1747) but there is a death for a Mary James 28 Jan 1747 which using PAF puts against her.I can only find three other Mary James bap. Penzance, 1&2 ds/o Charles b. 1756 and another 1761 so they would be too late. 3. Mary 1735 Penzance d/o Thomas or there is a Mary d/o Thomas and Margt 1744 Sancreed. There are a number b. St JinP and some years ago Carlene suggested that she may be Mary twin d/o Henry James and Grace Bennett b. 1752. It didn't sound to me like a twin thing on top of being in ST J in P which is not next door. Do You have any suggestions? Miriam N

The 1744 Mary of Sancreed is quite feasible but her father's name was Thomas. Given that the illegitimate son of 'our' Mary was named Henry James points towards the possibility that Calene may be correct. There are two possibilities I usually try to consider when trying to identify the mother of a 'bastard' child. 1. the child will be named after the mother's father 2. the child will be named in such a way that it might 'infer' the name of the father of said child. Might have to think more about this and try to check some more information (if I can find it) and see what more may be learned.

Hi all. I have solved my brick wall I think. Checking through an film I had read many years ago I found again the birth of Henry James base son of Mary. Looking further I also found the death of an infant Henry shortly afterwards. This meant He was not my Henry. To help out I then listed all James births and marriages from the Family search (omitting entries not extracted) in West Penwith. It left me with two Henrys in St Just. I consulted a member of st Just study group and this led my to my Henry James b. 1770 St Just and four generations further back. Now we are back to a marriage in 1639. Thanks everyone for your input. Miriam N.
