Kathie's abstracts include one for the will of Matthew Osborne, dated 1709 (proven 1715), who leaves bequests to his grandson John Quick, who was made executor, and to an Ann (daughter of a John Quick) who was then unmarried, and to an Ann wife of a John Quick who is presumably the mother of both the younger Ann and of the executor, and hence a daughter of the testator himself. There are also legacies to Matthew's brother Bernard and to his "brothers & sisters" (unfortunately not named).
However he also leaves bequests to Thomas Richards and Thomas' wife Mary. This is surely the Thomas Richards who married Mary Roberts at Zennor in 1705. They were not trifling legacies either. Thomas was bequeathed a cow and a suit of clothes, and Mary was given 10 pounds, a cow, 2 pans and the bed that she was then sleeping on!
Their relationship to Matthew though is not stated, and that's what makes these legacies intriguing.
Matthew married at Zennor in 1664 to a Mary Usticke, widow and she predeceased him in 1690. I have not found any other children to him except for the daughter named in the will.
While it is certainly possible that Thomas and Mary were not relatives of his, and perhaps received bequests for some other reason (did they perhaps support him in his old age? ) the value of the legacies vis-a-vis what was left to Matthew's named/apparent relations makes me wonder if there was a family connection with either Thomas or Mary.
Was Matthew a grandfather to one or the other of them? The chronology though for this to be the case is pretty tight, for with Matthew married in 1664 and Thomas married to Mary in 1705 there is a mere 41 years for two generations: maybe possible but not too likely.
Could either of them have been the child of a sibling to Matthew? Thomas' parentage is not presently known to me, so I do not know if his mother may have been an Osborne connection or not.
I have argued on another post that I think Mary's mother was Grace daughter of a James Quick.
Can anyone add anything on these folk?
