The birth dates listed above are an estimate. I am trying to sort out the various Mary HOSKINGs who resided at or were considered members of Ludgvan parish in order to determine the parentage of mine.
Mine gave birth to a base child, Grace, in March 1800. The bastardy bond lists two men, Joseph Bowden and Richard Edwards, as putting up bonds for the child.
In the bastardy bonds, she is called Mary Hosking and there is a 'defining term' after the Hosking in small letters -- Gide.
If you look at the parish chest records -- and I have read them all -- there are several Mary Hoskings in the parish. One, at Botreva, is the wife of Francis. She is not my Mary.
One, Mary Hosking with the definer "Garris" is not my Mary, but could be the mother of my Mary because she is caring for her daughter's child in the early 1800s and getting parish relief from Ludgvan for doing so (even though, as I understand it, Garris farm is in Gulval parish).
Another Mary Hosking is called Mary Hosking -- Troolly. I think this might be from Truthwall/Truthall. But I"m not certain. The only other Trooly/Troolly definer I found was for a John Uren. There are Hosking and Uren connections in this parish and two marriages of John Hoskings and Mary Urens, though one was a widow, in the 1770s.
My Mary Hosking (Gide) had another illegitimate child, Richard Angwin Hosking, in 1807. Richard Angwin Sr and Richard Angwin Jr were bondsmen in that birth.
There was a Mary Hosking who was sent back from Gulval to Ludgvan prior to the birth of an illegitimate son in 1804. There is no qualifier after her name, and no bastardy bond in Ludgvan parish. The child was baptised Job Murrish Hosking. There was a young man named Job Murrish in Gulval parish at the time of the boy's birth.
So . . . I'm trying to sort them all out. I would like to find out if my Mary (Gide) is the mother of Job Murrish Hosking or if this is yet another Mary Hosking. Job Murrish's mother says her father was John Hosking and he was dead by the time she was removed from Gulval prior to her son's 1804 birth.
The only other possibly significant reference I've found so far is a bequest in the will of Andrew Hosking of Porthcullom, St Erth, who left his housekeeper, Mary Hosking, a sizable bequest. Andrew Hosking was formerly of Ludgvan. And Mary's daughter, Grace, married Anthony Rodda of Crowan at St Hilary in 1820. They lived much of their marriage in Relubbus, or the part of St Erth that is contiguous with Crowan (Kerthen and Kerthen Wood as well as Gurlyn). This proximity to Porthcullom makes me think Mary and Grace could have lived there.
Any insights, suggestions, (does Gide refer to Gidestone? Or something else?), comments or ideas most gratefully received. I go away from this problem and come back to it every few months.
Many thanks,
Barbara
