Hello everyone,
My name is Sam, and I live in Adelaide, South Australia.
I have many ancestors in Cornwall, and really enjoy researching family history.
It's also been very interesting since I submitted my DNA.
My interest in in a line of my family I have not spent much time exploring.
I've spent lots of time looking at the GREEN family from Helston, Cornwall, but I've recently started looking at my ancestor Ann HARVEY, born 07 May 1715 in Penzance to Sir Christopher Harvey and Honour Harvey, born Roberts.
Ann Harvey married John GREEN in 1747, in Sennen, Cornwall. Their son, William Green had a daughter, Sarah Green. It is Sarah who married Joseph Pappin and emigrated to South Australia. Sarah Pappin is buried not far from where I live.
Anyhow (back to the start)!! I have never really explored the Green family, which has led me to the HARVEY family.
I can see that Sir Christopher Harvey (1675-1748) lived in Sennen Cornwall, and is the son of John (Thomas) Harvey 1643 - 1710 in Sennen. He is the son of Sir Thomas Harvey 1596 - 1695, born Sennen, died Bodmin. Possibly the son of Rev Francis Harvey Sr, (Breage Cornwall) 1562 - 1607.
I am wondering where the "sir" title came from, and if there is any other information anyone has about this family (or if it's even correct).
Please let me know if anyone has any tips or suggestions.
Warm regards,
Sam.

Hi Sam and Welcome to Penwith Genealogy. It happens that I have been working on the Harvey families for some time now although hoping to be able to move on to my next family of interest shortly. However, although not completed, a lot of my work to date has been on the Harvey families around the Lands End area. First thing to point out is that the 'Sir' being connected to Christopher Harvey is new to me and I suspect it is a lable attached by a more modern day 'researcher'. He was certainly known as 'Gent.' but he was never knighted! I can also correct another point which is that from what I have been able to piece together of the Harvey families there is no way Christopher can be directly related, if at all, to Francis Harvey the Vicar of Breage. Francis appears to have arrived in Cornwall around the 1580s and he died in 1606/7 being buried at Breage 2nd March 1606/7. There are records of Harveys in Cornwall, mostly in the far West around Sennen and St Just, long before the arrival of Francis and it is notable that I have not been able to find any record of Francis having ventured further West than Phillack. Also, the timeline of projected births for the family of Christopher suggests that Francis had died well before Christopher's grandfather could have been born. Removing Francis from the equation does still provide plenty to keep you interested though! The main issue with areas such as Sennen and St Levan is that no records, save for some Quaker records, survive prior to 1699 but there are a few Wills that help piece the families together. St Buryan, where many of the Harveys were located, has records back to 1653 but many of those earlier records are damaged and in same cases impossible to read but again the Wills help as do the 1641 Protestation Returns and the 1662/1664 Hearth Tax. I cannot guarantee an answer to every question but I will certainly be able to help with many of the queries you may have. CT

Thank you so much for your prompt response, and for the information you have shared. I am very grateful. I have spent so many years on my other Cornish family, namely the Hicks family from St Mabyn, and Pappin family from Helston that I am looking forward to learning more about the Harvey family.
Thanks for the very interesting start.
Warm regards, Sam B.
