I just received a copy of my grandfathers birth certificate Reginald Oates born 3rd January 1901. Warren St Ives. Father Richard Oates - coal miner Mother Mary Edward’s Oates, formerly Binney Wondering, a suggestion for the best place to start searching. I will update ancestry with these exact names and dates Thanks Dayan

And with that information I can now offer a baptism:- Reginald son of Richard (miner) and Mary Edwards Oates of Westcott's Quay baptised 13th March 1901 St Ives (born 3 Jany. 1901) That information can be found on the Cornwall Online Parish Clerks site which you will find an excellent source of information. Not only transcripts of most of the Cornwall Parish Registers up to at least 1900 but also transcripts of many Wills along with other information about Wills that will help you to locate them. There is other interesting information available as well along with links to the OPC for each of the Parishes where you may find additional help. www.cornwall-opc-database.org/This is a free resource with no membership/login requirements. There are also many of the Cornwall registers available online via FamilySearch so you will have the opportunity to view original records as the one referred to above. And - if you login in and have a search of the OPC site (link above) you will find a transcript of the marriage record for Richard Oats and Mary Edwards Binney at St Ives in 1892. Continue here with further questions as they arise and there will be someone able to help you along the way. I will keep this conversation here for the time being but as things progress I will determine a more appropriate place for it. If the family proves to have been at St Ives for a long period then I will probably move the whole conversation to that Parish Forum but for now just keep posting here. CT

Father Richard Oates - coal miner 'Coal miner' is interesting since there isn't any coal in Cornwall. But reference to the FamilySearch website (free access once you open an account) gives a transcript of the 1911 census for the family shows father Richard to be actually working at a coal mine in the Rhondda, in south Wales familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XW6B-RV6 .You can also find the 1901 census transcript there, which shows Richard to be absent, and Reginald and family living in the household of Mary J. Binney in St. Ives.
