Hello! I've been trying to piece together my immediate family tree on and off over the last couple of months - if anyone spots any rookie errors/that I have picked up a glaring copy and paste mistake from Ancestry (e.g. I had Zenobia on there as 'Zenobia Sinobyl' for...an awfully long time, haha), that would be great -- I'm trying to double check it all before I start getting myself into a research spiral. Thanks all! Thomas Quick (????-????) m. Zenobia ???? (????-????) > Anthony Quick (1634-1698) m. Elizabeth Randal (????-1698) >> William Quick (1666-1734) m. Jane Carter (1670-1757) >>> John Quick (1710-1751) m. Elizabeth Austian (1706-1769) >>>> William Quick (1734-1782) m. Sarah Gibbons (1738-????) >>>>> William Quick (1756-1809) m. Jane Labdon (1756-1841) >>>>>> Thomas Quick (1795-1877) m. Susannah Willliams (1801-1883) >>>>>>> Edwin Quick (1840-1921) m. Augusta Pengelly Coventon (1845-1917) >>>>>>>> Thomas Quick (1873-1951) m. Annie Ware (1875-1931) >>>>>>>>> Thomas Quick (1898-1897) m. Florence Bennett (1899-1985) >>>>>>>>>> David John Quick (1925-1989) m. [Redacted] >>>>>>>>>>> [Redacted] Quick m. [Redacted] >>>>>>>>>>>> Elinor Quick (1994) (me! )

Hi Elinor - working from Thomas and Zenobia on down the list your first error is at William son of John Quick and Elizabeth Austian. William (baptised 22nd January 1733/4 at Breage) married Jane Strick at Breage 22nd December 1759. There were thirteen children from this marriage and William eventually died in 1797. He was buried at Breage 3rd December 1797 at the age of 63. William also left a Will dated 24th November 1797 at Breage and proved 3rd December 1797. So you problem actually begins with the identity of the William who married Sarah Gibbons and as far as I can tell from my previous research there is no Cornwall connection. William Quick and Sarah Gibbons were married at Woodbury with Exton in Devon 19th April 1756 and as there are records of Quicks in Devon going right back into the 1500s I would suggest that is where your connections will be. Woodbury is up near Exeter. Sorry to disappoint you regarding the Cornwall connection but I have spent a lot of time in the past working on the Quick families of West Cornwall and there is no William Quick from that area who could possibly have been married in Devon in 1756. If you were to search for all the children of William and Sarah their names might offers some clues to the names of their grandparents which could then help you find baptisms for William and Sarah. Foiled by Ancestry yet again! Thanks very much for the tips - I shall go back and start investigating accordingly!

Sorry to have disappointed Elinor but I think you may have suspected already that there could be problems. You did mention 'cut and paste' and you did mention 'Ancestry' which no doubt was a reference to Ancestry Family Trees. I invariably find those terms do often indeed mean 'trouble'. Nevertheless, you had the common sense to begin asking questions before getting too far down the garden path so that's a good thing. Our focus here is mainly on the West of Cornwall but feel free to continue your thread and ask for help. There may be others watching the site or even possibly other members who may be able to offer some help. I have delved a little into Devon records where I had known Cornish connections but not to any great depth. I also know that there are still quite a number of Devon records that are not available openly or online. That does make life a little more difficult unfortunately. Best of luck. CT

There does seem to be a strong Devon connection - Woodbury as CT has said and Lympstone which is in the similar area up around Exeter. FindMyPast, a subscription site, probably has the best coverage of Devon PRs but it may be worth an enquiry on the Devon Family History message board on members.boardhost.com/devonfhs/ .
