Hi,
I have just joined the site.
My 3rd gt-grandmother was Mary Pearce Tonkin (1780 -1858) of Paul.
Her parents were Richard Tonkin (1756 - ) and and Mary Pearce (1758 - 1780). Her mother died at, or soon after, her birth and her father married Joan Pentreath (1765 - ) in 1785 at Paul.
Her father's parents were Paul Tonkin (1720 -) and Elizabeth Downing (1733 - ), who married at Paul.
We see that Paul Tonkin's father was Richard Tonkin and in 1719, a Richard Tonkin married Elizabeth Pearce at Paul. I think this latter couple must be Richard's Parents.
The only feasible Richard Tonkin of Paul is that baptised in 1684 (son of Edward) and there were two Elizabeth Pearce's baptised at Paul in 1685 and 1686. However, I feel that these are too old to marry in 1719 and then start having children.
The forename Paul is quite unusual among the Tonkin family and I note Paul Tonken (1656 -1714) of Paul is one of the few cases. There are several baptisms at Paul in 1689, 1691 and 1693 of his daughters: Grace, Honor and Jane in 1689, 1691 and 1693. There is then a large gap before a son, Shilson, was baptised at Madron in 1704.
I think this Paul Tonken is quite likely to be the grandfather of Paul Tonkin (1720 - ) and that there was a Richard Tonken born between 1693 and 1704, where there are considersble gaps in the Madron baptism registers.
There is mention on a 'World Heritage' tree of a marriage between Paul Tonken and Jane Baynard at madron on 8th Nov 1683.
Also, it appears that Jane Tonken (1693 -), as above, married William Maddern (1693 - ) at Paul in 1723, and they are the parents of Aaron Pearce (1731 - ) of Paul, who was the father of Mary Pearce (1758 1780).
Any comments on the above would be most welcome!
Thanks
Gordon
