Hello, I'm a new member from here near the coast of Virginia, USA (near Jamestown). I am researching my possible 8th great- grandfather, John Oates (Otts, Otes), possibly Capt, born in St Just around 1600, died 1665. My maternal grandmother was an Oates from North Carolina and I ha ve reasonable info that John Oates was my last Oates ancestor in England. He married Mary Cock in 1628. My 7th ggf is James Oates, the youngest child (born ~1647).He came to Virginia ~1660 after Jamestown was settled.
I have research that lists John as a "tynner" (miner). Just yesterday I saw online that a Captain John Oates owned a mine, Great Wheal Leisure copper mine, near Perranporth, but I can find nothing that supports this. Can anyone help me out? I'd greatly appreciate it. 🙂

Hello Cousin,
I too am a descendent of John Oates. I believe John(b 1600)from info I have read in the past, was a man of some substance . Unfortunately I didn't make record of where I found this info, but my memory tells me he mined (panned) for tin in the Nancherrow valley and that he left a will which is available at the Cornwall Records Office. I haven't followed this up as my main research is Mitchell.
My link to Oats is through my paternal g-grandmother Mary Oates (b 1845) D of Richard (1810) s of Richard (1780) s of Richard (1750) s of Thomas (1710) s of Thomas (1679) son of Thomas 1642 son of John Otts and Mary Cock.
I have a Bible Christian hymn book given to my father by Mary in 1915.

Although too early for someone born 1600, these are the tax entries in the St Just Easter Books for Oats:
Bosswen: 1589: John OTES 4d, Richard OTES 2d. Bosswen 1590: John OTES 4d, James OTES 2d. Bosswen 1591: John OTES 4d; Bosswen 1592 John OTES 4d; Bosswen 1593: John OTES 4D; Richard OTES 4d Bosswen 1594 & 1596 John OTES 4D Bolohall 1594: Richard OTES 4d 1595 missing.
My understanding is 4d married man, 2d a widower, Single persons no fee listed. (Although some 2d have vid by them, and others don't.. could 2d be for another status as well) ( d = pennies)
Either way we have James, Richard and John living in Bosswen.
My earliest Oats is another James who married in 1606. I assume he was the son of one of these, but you know what asumptions do! I am also descended from John Oats and Mary Cock who married in 1628. Interestingly they had sons John, James, and Richard (plus Matthew and Thomas)

Also a transcript of the Will and inventory of John Oates in 1665. Interestingly he names son James as an executor. Was he in Virginia? This copy is courtesy of Rob Oats and his website.

freepages.rootsweb.com/~flebbe/genealogy/surnames/oates.htmlI have seen some sources about this and am curious as I connect to members of the Cock and Harvey families in the southern part of the USA. Nothing yet on the Blewett family myth. I have a bit of thinking trouble re: James 1648 being the man who married Elizabeth Perry widow Evans being the son of John Cock who died in 1665, as I suspect he was a bit younger. Stories place the family in Virginia by 1753. The details behind that that would be helpful. Just me, and I am not an expert on this. I do have unexpected DNA links to Virginia, the Carolinas, etc., that fascinate me. My family members were not there in a relative tamefrime! Zib
