Is anybody out there researching the Ceely family either in Cornwall or Devon? My hubby is fed up with my nattering about the Ceelys. I seem to have developed an obsession with them. Well, a mild obsession, honest!

Hi Jacob, thank you for your response. I'm afraid those Seelys/Ceelys are not part of my family research as far as I know, or not directly anyway. My Ceelys/Ceelies/Ceelyes are in Plymouth and surrounding area, and in St Ives, St Hilary and Mylor during the 1500s and 1600s. I'm interested in finding out if anybody else has the Ceely name in their tree to see if any dots could be joined. Or just out of general interest. I've found very very few trees on Ancestry with the Ceely name at this time period and wondered if I was the only one researching them!

Kingskerwell is not far from Plymouth so maybe there is a connection. The family could have moved closer to where the work was or married into a Plymouth family. Richard Seely was probably born late 1600. It might be worth delving into the different spellings of the surname to see what crops up.

While I am not researching this family myself, I recall that there was a Peter Ceely who was prominent in the Penwith area around the time of the Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell. From memory he was an officer (Major) in the Parliamentary army. Check out John Hobson Matthews' "A History of the Parishes of St Ives, Lelant, Towednack and Zennor" for more info.

Hi Trencom, yes this is the family I've been researching for the past couple of years. Major Peter Ceely is my 9x great grandfather.
And yes, I've read Hobson Matthew's fascinating book several times, it's been great to add detail to the names on my tree and to gain an insight into the area at that time.
With the help of the pedigree in Vivian's Visitations of Cornwall and various wills, documents and surviving parish records, I've made pretty good headway with piecing the Ceely family history together.
However, I have various stray Ceelys in Cornwall around the mid 1600s to the early 1700s, whom I haven't been able to tie in just yet. Hence my post to see if anybody has the name in their tree, and maybe evidence of the Ceelys I have overlooked.
I'm sure someone will pop up eventually, and I'm happy to share my research when they do.

Hi!
If you are still researching the Ceelys please get in touch. I'm a descendent of the Somerset Celys/Sealeys of North Curry who claim kinship to the Devon/Cornwall Ceelys - same coat of arms etc. I'm currently working on the Devon/Cornwall branches. It would be great to compare notes and queries.

Hi, I am also researching the Ceely family from North Curry. Penelope Ceely (1664-1729) was my 7 x great grandmother, who was the daughter of William Ceely (1845 - ?). Any information on the Ceely family would be greatly received, thanks in advanceā¦
