You might want to have a look at the AncestryDNA Helper tool. It's a free browser extension but only available for Chrome. It provides the ability to search for matches by user name (this can be useful if a match has the same user name in GEDmatch and Ancestry) and it allows for downloading match info. Also you can upload your results to FTDNA which is free but you can't use their chromosome browser and if your DNA was done using Ancestry's new V2 chip you wont be able to see your speculative matches. Always beneficial to have as many bases covered as possible in the DNA matching game.

The more who test, the better this gets. Gandolph and Spike are such great helpers. The science does work. I have a match today to a fifth cousin once removed on my Semmons of Crowan line (the Kerthen thread and more.) I have had her on my tree for awhile; the test result confirming it is great! I have some Angove connection and will check them out, Mike. Figuring out Gedmatch takes some time, but I have found some valuable matches there. Zib PS: I have prepared my sister to be ready to spit. We grew up with a card game called "Spit" that our mother used to play with her sister

My DNA matches surprise me. I have no framework for this so am building one. A sibling shares 2500+ CentiMorgans. No first cousins of mine have tested yet. I share 400-600 with my parents' cousins. My second cousins "check in at the 100 to 200 cM level. FYI

If it's a DNA framework you are after, here is one that has been prepared earlier- Attachments:

Thanks, Spike, I will check it out. Blaine is very knowlegable, and I think I mentioned him in the Spanish thresd or wherever else we parked our DNA discussion. My choice has been to build a spreadsheet for up to 4 to 6 cousin range and anyone with whom I share a DNA match. Your suggestion re: the search program is great. However, when I researched it, I found that it set all matches back to "new." Working on 5000 matches for a year, I just could not take that route.

Thanks Spike and Zibetha.
I'll look at the Ancestry dna helper before long. Gardening calls for today in this basking sunshine. Must be summer for today in England. I've just checked through my known dna links, ie those where the trees can show a close relationship, and the top ranked dna results as follows;
A 2nd cousin x1 removed came in at 100cm's. A 3rd cousin at 46cms A 3rd cousin x1 removed 46cms Two 4th cousins come in at 47 & 81 cms. (Apologies for earlier saying I had only found 4th cousins back..)
Like Zibetha, I have prepared a spreadsheet for the 4-6th cousin matches on Ancestry, and added a few more 'interesting' looking connections, to make a list of 100 to concentrate on. Only problem is, I keep finding others who look worthy of research, especially when I consider my main reasoning for the test in the first place was to break down some brick walls. By nature any progress in this area will probably come about through more distant cousins.
have a good day everypone.

I will hopefully get the sample sent off tomorrow and then I guess it is a waiting game until the results come back. Meantime I suppose I should spend some time sorting out what I will need to do when they do get back!

Meantime I suppose I should spend some time sorting out what I will need to do when they do get back! Will be interesting CT. Its either 3rd or 4th great grandparents we share, so there should be some sort of signal. I did my DNA through 23&me, but have put it up on Gedmatch. My mother (the Trewhella connection) has done her spit kit on Ancestry a couple of weeks ago. Processing not complete as yet. Through gedmatch and wikitree I have had contact with other descendants of John Gilbart and Elizabeth Huthnance who are 4th great grandparents.

I am anxious to see where this all leads ! CT, I went through my matches a few times before I decided how to handle/organize/work with them. You will need to see what results are presented to you, and then we will share all or our hints and shortcuts. At least, in the beginning, the results trickle in. I suspect we all wrap our heads around this information differently. For me, some of the matches verify conclusions I made, and others help bridge the gap of missing records. 6-10+ matches confirming a family group make me feel like I could well be on the right track! My sample did indeed get posted this morning! I will attempt to make some sort of attempt to read through the various threads prior to receiving my results but I can't guarantee it will happen. Nevertheless, once the results are in I will let you know and we can progress from there. CT

It will certainly keep you busy CT. Might find we're all related lol! My Prelimanary results confirm various ancestral lines, though several key surnames are conspicuous by their absence.. So far!

Mike
One small point to keep in mind in relation to the Search by name or area function in Ancestry is that it will only work with those tests that have an associated tree with the kit connected to a person in that tree. It will ignore any kit without a tree completely.
And even if the user has an online tree, if they have not directly associated their DNA test with someone in the tree, searches by name and/or location will not show the test either.
